At Da- vis Creek, in the sameé vicinity, Joe Wehrend is developing and prospecting a seam of coal out- cropping above the beach. Another coal property on Ad- miralty Island examined by Mr. Stewart was a property located on Murder Cove near Tyee on the south end of Admiralty Island which had been worked by the U. S. Navy in the '70s. The old ca- bins and buildings are still stand- ing, he said. A five-foot seam of bituminous coal had been re- ported on the property by the U. S. On the west coast of Kupreanof Island he visited the head of Ham- ilton Bay where coal had pre- viously been reported to occur. He found coal there had been de- véloped' by the Russians in the early days by means of a shaft. Mr. Stewart said that he found surface coal there, but no bed, though the formation is' of a coal bearing type.
