CAPITOL BiLL Helen Hayes Plays Oppos- ite in “A Farewell to Arms” Although he was practically raised in the saddle, Gary Cooper has just taken an intensive course in horseback riding. Cooper, starred with Helen Hays “A Farewell to Arms,” screen ve! n of the Ernest Hemingway novel, which comes to the Capi- tol Theatre tonight got a few ad- ditional pointers in the art from Italian riders when he was in Europe recen! Cooper spent his boyhood on a ranch, was an expert cowpuncher for several years and st starring career on the een hard-riding Western pictures. “I studied in Rome under two officers of the Tour de Quinto,” Cooper explained. “The Italians are spectacular riders apd bave exceptionally good mounts. Their entirely different from ride for effect which is a greater asset foy picture work. If I ever ride a horse again on the screen I will have something new to show.” Cooper’s main exercise is riding horseback. H2 has several mounts stabled in San Fernado valley where he hides whenever his screen work permits. He does mnot ride, however, in “A Farewell to Arms.” In it he is cast as the young American, in in corps during the war, who, in. the Hemingway novel, tells the story in the first person. Helen Hayes, star of “The Sin of Madelon Claudet” and “Arrow- smith,” plays the role of the Eng- lish nurse with whom he falls in Jove. Their affair, under pres- sure of the war, rises to ecstatic heights which blot out, in their eyes, everything else.
