An “Associated Press dispatch early Sunday said theeNorthland returned to Nome, without entering Siberian tional complications. Request From Mattern ceived a radiogram from Irving Friedman, of Kings' Brewery, New tion, saying he had received a re- quest from Mattern that “you fly to Anadir, turn your ship over to him. Soviet plane will fly you to Nome. Both planes will arrive about the same time. You accom- pany Mattern on other ship to Terrace, British Columbia, turn the Kings’ Beer ship over to Mattern and let him finish the solo trip around the world.” About noon yesterday an Asso- == ciated Press dispatch said the Sov- {iet offered to fly Mattern to Nome to pick-up a metor or parts, also jthat H. B. Jameson, of Chicago, == one of the backers of Mattern in his attempted flight, had received 'a radio from Mattern asking an- == other ship to continue the flight. Would Continue Flight During the afterncon another As- soclated Press dispatch said Mat- nm had requested that a plane |from Juneau be flown to him to permit him to continue his solo flight. - According to pregss dispatches Eaturday, two versions of Mattern's ! one’ that his i plight were given, plane was demolished and the otn- er that he required a motor and !this would be supplied to him by |the Soviet. Sunday dispatches in- dicated however that he had motor |trouble and required a new motor. When the relief party soared away from Juneau this morning == |the plans, as announced by Alexan- der were as follows: | The OChichagof would be flown |to Anadir by Pilot Ellis, after re- fueling at Fairbanks and Nome. | Alexander and Fetterman, both personal friends of Mattern, would |attempt to induce him to return with them to Nome. e could ac- company Ellis and they would make the refurn flight to Nome on the Soviet plane which it is indi- cated, would reach Anadir about the same time Ellis reaches there. At Nome, all would board the Chi- chagof, fly to Fairbanks, refuel, then come to Juneau, refuel here, g0 to Prince Rupert, then to Ter- Tace. Alexander said there was a good lake on which Pilot Ellis could make a safe landing. “Of course our plans may be said Alexander. “Yes, they might,” said Fetter- man, “but I helieve I can per- suade Jimmy to return with us. However if he believes the installa- tion of a new motor is the best thing and he can continue his flight, T am at his service.” Fetterman is a veteran Lockheed- Vega factory mechanic, and has +|prepared several planes for world flights, including Mattern’s. -Just previous to leaving on this expedi- {tion he finished work on the rabot- controlled plane in which Wiley Post is ready to solo around the world from Floyd Bennett field as coon as weather conditions per- mit. “Bill” Alexander, leader of the expedition, 'is a well known flier and Thomas Abbey is a New York City Motorcycle policeman and a registered air pilot, on a vacation. ‘The™ trio”"was ‘impatient to get. away on their roller work and Wash It Ug).
