ATTEMPTED - ABDUCTION REPORTIS NOT TRUE Fire at Home of James Roosevelt Rumored as Screen to Kid- naping Plot RYE BEACH, New Hamp- shire, June 15.—The family of James Roosevelt, son of President Roosevelt, is stay- ing at the home of relatives as the result of a fire that damaged their home to the extent of at least $5,000. Young Roosevelt is in the insurance business in Boston. He quickly denied, as did a statement from the White House, in” Washington, that there had been threats to kid- nap his small daughter. Officers -believed that the fire might have been intend- ed for a screen for the kid- napers but young Roosevelt said there was absolutely nothing to the kidnap report. KIDNAPER IS SHOT, KILLED WHEN TRAPPED Oregon Attorney Lured to Building and Chained by Abductors ROSEBURG, Oregon, June 15.— Jack Haley, garage mechanic, was shot to death by a policeman when he attempted to-collect $125 ran- son after kidnaping Ray Compton, attorney. The police fired as Haley at- tempted to flee after being sur- rounded. Frank Park, driver of Haley's auto, and Reta and Douglas Win- ningham, at whose home Compton was found chained, were arrested. ‘Compton was lured into a build- ing on the outskirts of the town, overpowered, chained and forced to write a note to his wife order- ing the ransom. Mrs. Compton conferred with the police who trapped the kidnapers when they arived for the money.
