It neans loyalty to our traditions, our business and verything that conduces to our spiritual, intellectual asd material welfare. The moral effect of such a campaign is beyond computation. We have drifted along for years, satisfied in our own minds that we léad the world in everything, in patriotism, culture, education, prosperity and all that distinguishes a great people and puts them in the van of progress. We have suddenly awakened to find that instead of leading in prosperity as our great natural re- sources would entitle us, of all nations in the world we are suffering the most from the effects of depression, We have learned that our gr2at European com- petitors have led us in patriotism and intelligent self-interest, and have for months been conducting an intensive campaign to educate their people to buy at home and patronize thefr own industries, thus keeping their own workmen employed and making their own countries prosperous. It is needless here to call attention to the results of such a policy. It stares us in the face every day in silent canneries, idle machinery, de- serted logging camps and mining communities, thou- sands of men out of work and families subsisting through charity. Is there no analogy between the position in which our nation finds itself and that of our own com- munities in Alaska? Is it not just as essential that the people of Alaska, and Juneau, should protect their interests, safeguard their business and lend their efforts to that end as that the people of the United States should unite to bring prosperity to their country? And is it not just as true that if we neglect to safeguard our own interests to build up our own busincss and stimulate our own trade, that those districts that are far-sighted and enterprising enough to do these things will lead us in business advance- ment, growth and prosperity? It is because The Empire feels that to be the case, and that Alaska has made the same mistake as has our nation, that it has thought the present an opportune time to appeal to the people of the Territory to Buy American—Buy Alaskan, Buy Ju- neau. We hope that a campaign of this kind will focus attention of our residents upon their own section and on the need of patronizing our own business institutions.
