Now that beer of 3.2 per cent alcoholic content by weight is legal, the old controversy concerning aleohol percentage by weight and by volume takes on more meaning than that of an academic discus- sion, such has has been the case in recent years. The argument hinges on the way in which an alcoholic content of beer at 3.2 per cent by weight is equivalent to 4 per cent alcohol by volume. The basic reason is that alcohol is lighter than water. If one weighs a given volume of alcohol and compares it with the weight of an equal volume of water the ratio of the weight comes out to .793 plus. The scientific term for this ration is specific gravity. For alcohbl it simply means that a quart bot#le of alcohol will weigh less than a quart of water. Substances heavier than water have specific gravities greater than one. Those lighter have speci- fic gravities less than one. The specific gravity of water, of course, is taken as unity. Another way of saying the same thing is that for equal weights alcohol will occupy less space than water. Treating all substances in beer, exeept alco- lightful games in the world and of itself more than worth learning Swedish for. T'd stake my life on it that she hasn't the vaguest idea that Papa Judas Iscariot Pedro Maligni and his precious son think they are ‘n with us and would betray the Kaid to Germany—or the highest bidder.
