Girls Beat Alumni The Juneau Fire Department's entry in the Channel Basketball League last night defeated Doug- las Firemen, 28 to 23, to win the title of the first half of the sched- ule. It was a thrilling battle, the score seesawing first one way then the other, and was finally won by the locals in the last four min- utes of play. In the curtainraiser, High School girls outplayed the Douglas High School Alumni to win 25 to 17. The local sextette got away with a jump for a fine lead and held it throughout the game. Hellmann in Form It was the brilllant marksman- ship of Doc’ Hollomann, veteran forward, that made it possible for the local Firemen to win the de- ciding game of the first half of the ILeague play. He was “hot. Despite a close guard, sometimes by two Douglas players, he made opening after opening to sink the sphere in the net. He caged seven from scrimmage and three free throws for a total score of 17, which was some achievement a- gainst the opposition set up by the Islanders. Metzgar, lanky center, was run- nerup to Hollomann with eight points on three fields and two gift tosses. Garn with one field and Connors with a single-pointer add- ed the other three points. The locals played a hard, close-checking game that threw the visitors off their balance. Blake, Garn and Hayes were particularly effective on the defense and Metzgar, as- signed to the task of stopping Gair, Island scoring ace, held “him to a single field goal in the h.rstj half and three of them in the se- Juneau points. They stopped Jimmy Con- nors and troubled Metzgar, but they couldn’t bottle up Hollmann | and that with Metzgar's control of the tipoff gave the locals the winning edge. Girls Team Clicks ‘With Rocovich switched from her regular guard berth to forward Coach Burns' Juneau High School sextette really clicked for the first time this season. It func- tioned almost perfectly and against its smooth teamwork and the sharpshooting of Roecovich, ably seconded by Mildred Hanson's shooting ‘and passing, the Douglas Alumni was unable to make con- sistent headway. Rocovich caged six fields and two free throws for 14 points, Han- son sank four fields and three g!ft throws. Close checking by Wirn and Anderson, and the work of the two centers, Terhune and Menzgohr, featured the locals’ play.' Time Tc Ccol Off The game was fast, and at o:xe time got rather hectic. Just be- fore the end of the first half, Referee Engstrom called time out and gave the lassies two minutes to cool down. The scheme work- ed beautifully. R. Fraser was high scorer for the Island team. She dropped in four fields and one free throw for nine points. M. Fraser was a close second with three fields and two gift tosses for eight. | At the quarter-pole, Juneau led % 12 to 3; at the half, 17 to 10; the three-quarter post, 21 to 15 High School Wins J. H. F. Statter, Chief Deputy United, States Marshal found. He returned yesterday from an absence of some | three weeks, most of which was (spent in the Golden Gate City. Not only was it colder there than in this city, but the month was almost a succession of gales that did not add any to the agree- ability of the climate. Mr. Statter left here on Decem- ber 7 with prisoners for McNeil's{ Island. He added an insane pa- tient to the party at Ketehikan whom he took to Portland. From there he went to San Francisco for a short vacation. B S ATTENTION WOMAN’S CLUB During the holiday season the regular monthly club luncheon will be postponed. Watch for furth- er notice.
