Carroll, to offer the sclution that the dead heiress was the im of her own passion for publicity. Pers sons who had previously crossed the Atlantic with Miss Ceok told tales of the young woman's strange behavior on several occasions. Once, it is said, she lured an Indian Maharajah into the belief that she would marry him, but when the dusky potentate summoned the ¢captain of the ship to his cabin to perform the ceremony, the Boston heiress bolted, leaving the uncomfortable skipper to explain the “joke.” it is also recalled that when Miss Cook crossed the Atlantic last De- cember she received a similar fake message while the liner was off Lisbon. The girl attempted to throw herself overboard on that occa- sion and the resulting investigation disclosed that she had sent the message to herself. Dr. Carroll belisves that the events which led to her death were part of another scheme whereby the young woman hoped to attract attention, but that she miscalculated the amount of drug she administered herself to give the impression of suicide.
