B. Hall to participate in Ithe George Washington Bicenten- nial Ball given by Juneau Lodge |No. 700, Loyal Order of Moose. The music furnished by the Arctic Play ers, under the direction of Harry Brandt was all that could be™de- |sired and dancing was kept- up day morning. The costumes of Washington's time which were to be a feature of the celebration, owing possibly to the disagreeable weather, were not largely in evidence. Outstandingly the best was the costume worn by Miss Elaine Radalet who was award- ed the lady’s first prize, the gen- tleman’s prize being awarded to K. Johnson. et —— Old papers a. The service included an address 'on George Washington by the First Reader, in part, as follows: “Among all men who have at- tained an equal degree of promine ence, George 'Washington is one of | comparatively few whose public |and private lives are conspicuous for the presence of right and the | absence of wrong. | A Washington Trait | “One of Washington's traits was his intelligent devotion to unity of |thought and action by the Ameri- can colonies and states at times when this fundamental requisite seemed almost hopeless. . . Then, | after the colonies had become in- |dependent, when the new states |met to form a national constitu- | tion, probably they would have 7 failed, at least for that time, but for the unifying influence of Wash- | ington as President of the conven- tion. Respect for Religion | “Among Washington's most firm- |1y formed traits with his faith in |God and his respect for religion, |even for other people's religions. ‘When once extremely ill he calmly |said, ‘T know I am in the hands of a good Providence’ And he re- covered. To divine Providence, al- 50, he attributed his immunity from injury in battle; and at differ- ent times, particularly in the French and Indian war, his escapes from harm seemed miraculous. Evi- dently, also, he had a sense of Principle. - For instance, when the Constitutional Convention met in 1789, and the prospect for agree- ment on & plan of national gov- ernment seemed remote, Washing- ton said to his fellow-delegates from Virginia, ‘Let us raise a stan- dard to which the wise and honest can repair. The event is in the hands of God.” Lesson Sermon A Lesscn-Sermon prepared es- pecially for this occasion was read by the First and Second Readers. One of the Scriptural passages con- tained in this lesson-sermon was from 1 John 4:7— “Beloved, let us love one an- other: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.” A correlative passage from tne Christian Science textbook, “Science and Health with Key to The Scrip- LI [T LT T T L.and ‘”///,2/7- We Are Featuring Genuine tures” by Mary Baker Edd; follows: “This history of our coun- try, like all history illustrates the might of Mind, and shows human power to be proportionate to its embodiment of right thinking. A few immortal sentences, breathing the ommipotence of divine justice, have been potent to break despotic fetters and abolish the whipping- post and slave market; but oppre sion neither went down in blood, nor did the breath of freedom come from the cannon's mouth. Love is the liberator.” Slump of British Pound Nets Profit to Colombia BOGOTA, Feb. 22. — Colombia profited by the slump in the British pound when a debt of 1,000,000 pesos to a. British gold mining company shrank to 730,000 pesos. The company’s mines were con- fiscated several years ago, the Gov- ernment agreeing to pay 300,000 pounds sterling in three install- ments. The first payment was made last year. When the second becams due the company asked for 500,000 pesos, but the Government replied that the contract was based upon British currency. It was pointed out that it was no fault of Colombia, which ad- heres rigidly to the gold standard, that the pound, formerly worth five pesos, now brings less than four. — .o The Navy training course oi the University of California incluaes week-end cruises on destroyers. :!IIIIIIII!IIIIHllIlI||IIIIIIlIIIIIIIIIIIIIt|lIIfilllllIIIIIIIIIIIIIIlIIIiil|IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIH!lilll T TR g 4 TR T T T SR Alaska Seal We selected every coat with an eye to its style rightness—wider sleeves, the pencil skirt, the pinched-in waistline.
