’ PO FIRE FALLING ON BED WAKES COUPLE ASLEEP Skuse House—Occupied by Mr. and Mrs. D. Craw- ford Destroyed Blazing pieces of wood falling from the ceiling on the bed of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel L. Crawford as they lay asleep last night in the George Skuse house on Glacier Highway awakened them, and they had to hasten from the flaming room for their lives. They man- aged to drag out the bed, but this was the only piece of household furniture they saved, and they lost all their clothing and other per- sonal effects. The five-room dwell- ing an dthe nearby shed contain- ing a winter's supply of wood and a large assortment of tools, were destroyed. Loss Is Estimated At $3,000 Nothing was covered by insur- ance. Spark Blamed For Fire “The fire started from the roof, and burned down through to the rooms,” ‘explained Mr. Crawford today. “The house was occupled by Mrs. Crawford, Thomas Dodson and 1. Bverybody went to bed about 9 o'clock, and then the fire in the stove was low. I think a ,spark from the chimney must have fallen on the roof and caused the| 2 blaze. “It was (1 o'clock when Mrs. Crawford and I were roused by burning wood falling on our bed. Immediately on realizing the situ- ation, I grasped a shotgun and discharged it outside four times to bring the help of neighbors. None could respond in time to save any- thing. Makes Swift Headway “The flames made swift headway after we were awakened. The house was built some years ago and was lined with red cedar, so the struc- ure was dry end inflammable. Mrs. Crawford and I were almost over- come with the smoke in trying to save some of our effects. The only things we got out were the bed- stead ‘and clothing. Mr. Crawford a few months ago took a five-year lease, wita option to purchase, from the owner, Mr. Bkuse. The land area is 135 acres. The property is on Glacier High- way about opposite the Glacier Dairy. “I intend to farm ‘the place,” said Mr. Crawford today, “but I have not yet decided as to the erection of another dwelling on the land.” ——————— MERCY SLAYER FOUND INSANE MILLERSBURG, Ohol, Jan. 30.— James Stenhouse, stone cutter, con- fessed mercy slayer, has been found insane and ordered committed to the State Hospiatl.
