Al- bright, Director of the National Park Service. “You will be interested to know,” writes Mr. Albright, “that I have recently seen most of the Con- gressmen who wore in Alaska this summer and without a single ex- ception I found them extremely enthusiastic about Alaska and h pecple. Representative Frank Mur phy, Republican of Ohio, tells me that he has been lecturing all over his district and has talked a good! deal about Alaska. Interested in Alaska “He says that the people have been intenscly interested in Alaska talks. Incidentally, Mr. Murphy did not become Chairman of the Interior Department Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee because with the Democrats in con- trol of the House the chairman- ship fell to Congressman E. T. Tay- Jor of Colorado, who, of course, was in the party last summer. An- other man who has given many lectures on Alaska is Congressman Don B. Colton, Republican of Utah, znd a third member is Congress- man A. E. Carter, Republican of Oszkland, California, who was with the Senate Wild Lif: Commiltee. Senator Peter Norbeck, Republican of South Dakota, and Senator Fred- eric C. Walcott, Republican of Con- necticut, were profoundly impressed with Alaska. Wilbur Is Friendly “At the opening of the hearings on the next Interior Department appropriation bill, Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur made & fine statement about Alaska and all of the members of the commit- tee voiced their interest in Alaskan affairs. Mr. Murphy was particu- larly emphatic in his statements that Alaska needed sympathetic consideration. Mrs. Biddle, who had ex- pected to see two-gun men in |action in the North, was not so istartled or frightened by the “fatal pistol fight” as some of the old- time residents of Nenana who had | ot been informed of the hoax. Persons Of The Drama For the shooting episode, Airman | W. J. Late in the evening, while Mrs. Biddle was dancing with Michael Cooney, two men were heard quar- reling violently. Rodigkeit hurriedly 'pushed his way through the crowd |in what seemed like a serious and | determined effort to separate the combatants and restore order, but his efforts were without avail. Two Shots Ring Out shots rang out. Barrows sank o the floor with a remarkably real- istic slump, for all the world as if he had been mortally wounded. The orchestra faltered in its stride, nervous women . screamed and for an instant it seemed that the dance was about to Treak up in a panic; but Floor Manager ‘Wilson, with stentorian voice, com- manded the musicians to continue playing. The “corpse” was hastily Admitted She Was Nervous Mrs. Biddle afterwards admit- ted she was “mighty nervous,” but she explained that before coming to Alaska she had made up her, mind not to show any cowardice ! under eny situation.
