THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, FRIDAY, JAN. 22, 1932, ~ METCALF BOWLS 607 TO STROKE SHRIMPS TO WIN Veteran Gets Flying Start in New Tourney— Sockeyes - Take 3 Apparently Frank Metcalf has set his heart on that Ketchikan trip next month, for he went a long way toward qualifying for a place on the team last night when he smashed down 607 pins to lead his Shrimps to a three-game vic- tory over the Lebsters in the first match of the new Elks' bowling tournament. His best score was 214, which topped the evening's perfermances. The Sockeyes socked the Cohoes three straight in the second match. Dr. Stewart is a Sockeye and Fred Henning is a Lobster, but these two bowlers exchanged places last night for reasons of personal convenience, but the shift made no difference in the game results. Tonight's schedule: Chums vs. Clams; Crabs vs. Cohoes. Rexall ASTHMA POWDER 75¢ " Butler Mauro At a recent press conference with the great man, Babe Ruth was asked whether he had any idea of going into golf in a serious way, either as a sideline or as an aftermath to his baseball career. “Well, Tl tell you, I'm nutty about this game,” the Babe re- sponded, “but I don't know that I want to get up there and make a fool out of myself. “My game is baseball and always has been and I've never kiddad myself about anything else, no matter how good I thought I might It was suggested Ruth might pick up considerable money giving g0M exhibitions about the country. Folks would like to see him give the little white pellet a long, long ride. “Yeah, but I might get the horse laugh, too, when I put one o' them slices o' mine on the ball.’ Can’t Play Both Ruth is a golf addict all winter long, whether he is northor sonth. It's the one season when he can concentrate on this sport without being bothered by other responsi- bilities. During the baseball season it is seldem that Ruth even has an op- portunity to play. It would be fa- tal for him to attempt to play golf in the morning and bascball in the afternoon, especially during the hot weather. Rain or shine, snow or wind, however, this winter has found him trudging over various portions cof the metropolitan landscape, whack- ing the balloon ball with prodigious swipes. Early in the winter he shot a 73 at St. Albans, Long Is- land, but he has not been under 80 since. The best Ruth has ever done is @ 71 at the Jungle Club course, St. | Petersburg, Fla. That’s where he | makes his headquarters annually before and during the training campaign of the Yankees. Calls A’s Old The Babe doesn't see how the Yankees can miss winning the American league pennant this year from the Athletics. He bases this belief on the steady improvement and better pitching prospects of |the New York club, plus the opin- |ion that the A's are getting no | better and perhaps will skid down a little. “Grove and Earnshaw are still a pretty’ good pair of pitchers, kirds like Miller and Dykes are slowing up some. They are due to be knocked off.” Ruth omitted to mention thathe !is a half-year older than Miller and |two and a half years older than | Dykes, but maybe the Babe has younger ideas, at that . “Cur club should have a lot bet- ter pitching,” Ruth continued. “This Gomez is a great lefthander. Rhodes locks like he is ready to come through. Pipgras and Ruffing but | league. He has a great arm. He kas a bad habit of not hustling after the ball when he bobbles one, but he will get over that and make a real star.” LEFTY GOMEZ READY FOR ’32 BALL SEASON NEW YORK, Jan. 22.—Lefty Go- mez, once slender southpaw of the New York Yankees, was in fine shape today for the wear and tear of a big league baseball campaign. His weight was increased from 155 to 174 pounds. Gomez reported in New York ¢rom -California six weeks early in ordér to be near his fiancee, who is appearing in a {musical comedy here.
