Workers’ F' r;)wnsAre Drainin};r Thousands from Factory Tills By J. R. BRACKETT (Associated Press Business Writer) NEW YORK, Dec. 19.—Emotions cost one manufacturer more than $500,000 in one year—not the man- ufacturer’s emotions, but the un- happy emotions of his workers re: sulting from an imperfect plant environment. This is one of the conclusions drawn by Prof. Rex B. Hersey of the University of Pennsylvania, af- ter a year's search in an unnamed plant employing more than 20,000 méchanics and helpers. As might be expected, a happy worker produced more than anun- | happy worker — but the happy worker’s increase was far less than | g the unhappy worker's decrease. Conditions Affect Work On the basis of factors both within and without the plant, aver- age production was 99.84¢ per cent, while the average of the most nor- mal worker was 101.5 per cent. While this may seem a trifling difference, the statistics show that virtually all of this mormal work- er's drops in production resulted from factors not conneécted with his working life, while for a.’ll the work- ers in the test the plant situation accounted for most of their de- pressed production. Could Save Half Million “If the group average,” Professor sey has concluded, r individual adjustment tions to the various factors in the plant situation, could have been brought up merely to the most normal worker's average, this would have meant a saving rough- ly of $37 a year on each mechanic and $22.50 on ch helper. ration employing 19,- n a saving of $595, to mention the pos- f ggestions and improve- ments made cooperatively that might materially step up the pro- duction standard without the usual friction that accompanies such ac- tion.” - eee— - One or more children of Mr. and Mrs. I.
