Tonight is “Chinaware Night.” A piece of table chinaware will be given to every woman attending jeither of the two performances to- night. “Iron Man” is considered one of the strong pictures of the season. It is a love story from the pen of W. R. Burnett, who is also the author of “Little Caesar.” Both novels were selected as the “book of the month,” and have been heavy sellers. Fighter's Rise and Fall * “Iron Man” tells the story of the rise and fall of a prizefighter. It is a powerful story, rooted deep- 1y in American life, and with a pas- sionate, if unusual, love theme. Tod Browning directed the pic- ture. Francis Edwards Faragoh wrote the script. and dialogue. Trained Hard for Fight For the fight that Ayers stages in the picture he trained two months. After spending eight hours in other scenes before the camera, he would then go into action an hour and a half in the Universal gymnasium under the tutelage of Sammy Gervon. PiceLy.WiceLy HALIBUT MEN WORK TO MAKE MARKET S TABLE Better Prices Expect- ed in Spring Plans for the improvement of the halibut fishing industry are being by a committee com- posed of representatives of fishet- men, boat owners and dealers, ap- pointed at the recent joint meeting in Seattle of the three branches of the industry, according to word re- ceived by fishing interests in Ju- neau. Another matter of interest to Juneau fishermen is the statement from Seattle that at the meeting of the Deep Sea Fishermen’s Union to be held there December 29 a vote will be taken on the question whether Canadian fishermen shall separate from American fishermen and form their own union. Similar Issues With Owners A similar issue is to be deter- mined this month by the Fishing Vessel Owners' Association, namely whether ‘Canadian vessel owners shall separate from American vessel owners and form their own associa- tion. Ketchikan fishing interests rep- resent Alaska on the joint com- mittee of fishermen, boat owners and dealers appointed to devise plans for the stabilization of the halibut industry. O. M. Carter, of Ketchikan, is one of the representatives of the cold storage interests. Egil Erick- son, skipper of the halibut schoon- er Sunde d’E. and Chris Servold of the schooner Tordenkjold, both of Ketchikan, are representatives of vessel owners. All Interests Represented Other were appointed represent- ing the dealers and the Deep Sea Fishermen’s Union. The committee was instructed to study and investigate conditions to improve the halibut fishing busi- ness of the North Pacific ocean. Limitation of catches, consideration of closed areas, retail and whole- sale marketing, and efforts to se- cure for the fishermen a minimum stabilized price will be matters to be considered. It was decided also to ask the Canadian Fishing Vessel Own- er's Association to appoint a man for representation on the com- mittee, Questions of Separation ‘With respect to the questions of separation of the Canadian fisher- men from the American fishermen and of separation of Canadian ves- sel owners from American vessel owners, the Canadian fishermen | [+ HOSIERY GLOVES UNDERWEAR NEW KAYSER HOSIERY - NEW LOW PRICES New Popular Shades---All Sizes $1.60 $1.25 $1.65 KAYSER PAJAMAS In Plain and Combination Colors For Lounging and Sleeping $2.50 to $6.75 belonging ,to the union .and ,the Canadian . vessel owners belonging to the association are practically.a unit in declaring that the Ameri- can tariff duty must be equalized so that Canadian boats would be paid the same price for fish as paid American boats in Canadian ports, Most of the American hali- but men who attended the hearing of the international fisheries com-= mission in Seattle recently ~were against any lowering of American duty on halibut. ‘Therefore, from all accounts there seems little chance of the €anadian and Am- erican interests reaching an agree- ment. Guided By Organizations Halibut fishermen and vessel owners of Juneau are not affilia~ ted with the Deep Sea Fishermen's Union or with the Fishing Vessel Owners’ Association, but are in sympathy with them and are guided by their policies. Halibut interests here believe that spring and summer sales of halibut in the States and in for- eign markets will show an im- provement. At present dealers, fishermen and boat owners are faced with the same situation which confronts the farmers and every other class.. Halibut is being sold in Boston for 10 and 11 cents a pound wholesale. Every one familiar with fishing knows that nobody can make money at that price. But one advantage of the low price is the fact that the pres- ent stock of frozen fish is moving. Business men everywhere are sacri- ficing “old stock” in the hope of getting profits from new stocks. It is part of the readjustment plan. et TO TELEPHONE PATRONS A new telephone directory is now in course of preparation. Patrons contemplating change of address or persons who wish to have telephones installed are re- quested to notify the telephone company before December 26.
