Start Income Tax A personal income tax was in- augurated on all incomes exceeding $2,000 a year. A corporation fee of $1 per $1,000 capital stock brought in $682,000 in two months from 5,823 corporations. An extra one-cent gasoline tax for emergency relief for the poor and for highway purposes raised $1,302,908 from March 25, 1831, to November 1. ‘The legislature provided the tax should be reduced from five to four cents a gallon December 31, but Murray has started a move to con- tinue it until March 1, 1933, to ob- tain funds for a system of farm- to-market roads. PACIFIC HAS BAD WEATHER ON TRIP Having experienced some nasty weather, the motorship Pacific Capt. Paul Kegel, returned late yesterday afternoon from her voy- age to Kake, Petersburg, Saginaw Bay and way ports. On the re- turn trip, contrary winds of un- usual strength were encountered off the Taku. The Pacific did a good freight and passenger way-port busi- ness. For the adjustment work, both ves- sels must cooperate with each other. They probably will com- plete their task today. The Tallapoosa is scheduled to return this evening to her base in Juneau. The Alert may either| come back to this port, which sho| ‘has been visiting for two days, or| proceed to her base in Ketchikan, Capt. C. N. Dench, commander of the Tallapoosa, was not on the bridge of the craft when she de- parted this morning. He has been suffering three weeks from an at- tack of lumbago, and has been con- fined to his home in this city most of the time. He hopes to be en- tirely recovered by tomorrow. Former Alaska Resident Is Dead at Chehalis SEATTLE, Dec. 2—Orvyille A. ‘Tucker, aged 70 years, former State Senator from Seattle, former As- sistant Corporation Counsel of Se- attle, former United States Court| Commisgioner at Cordova, died at lis, Washington, yesterday. He is survived by his widow and three sons. Mr. Tucker was a resident of Ju- neau for a time and was employed by the Alaska Gastineau as an engineer. The affair gives every promise of being the best of the kind in the history of the high school. ——————— KELLER DUE TO RETURN SUNDAY Commissioner of Education on Last Lap of Ex- tended Inspection Commissioner W. -K. Keller, who has been on an extensive school survey and inspection since early last September, will return home on the Admiral Evans about next Sunday, according to word received from him at Department of Educa- tion headquarters here today. He is now visiting sohools in the Cor- dova and Copper River district. Mr. Keller covered northwestern, central and south central Alaska schools from 8eward Peninsula south and east, except the Kusko- kwim River district.
