It's another and more interesting mat- ter when Arthur Sampson, Har- vard's able backfield coach, writes in the Harvard A. A. News: “A close analysis of modern foot- ball quickly reveals that there is no perfect defense for the forward pass. . . . “In the days before the World War a defense for the pass was @& minor problem .. Coaches now spend hours in perfecting the exe- cation of this play. . . now necessary to impart several complicated systems for defending against the pass.” After noting the obvious ad- vantages as well as shortcomings of an exclusive “zone” on “man-to- man’ defense, Sampson goes on: “With exceptional players the man-to-man defense will work. Notre Dame has used it with good results. Cornell has used it for years but in Cornell's case it can not be said to have been entirely air-tight. “Recently a combination of these two defenses has become popuiar. Many coaches now teach this style | and, although it is still full of loopholes, the secret of its success lies in the fact that it is difficult for the defense to discover just what the defensive assignments are in the backfield. “What make sune defense against the pass even more complicated is the difficulty in knowing just when B0O0O-+HOO! + CAN'T MOVE MY L\TTLE CAR= TO BE THE ic Aveuclated Fress HARVARD KEEPS ON WIN STREAK Crickard and_Wood Make Lone Score in Game with Holy Cross CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 16.— scoring chances last Saturday to defeat Holy Cross and continue undefeated so far in the present season. } Harvard marched 172 yards, Harvard cashed in on one of two| ' | stake, and it is| a pass is coming. All of Notre Dame’s counters were made in the second period when Schwartz, Banas and Mur- phy each scored. The Crimson has shelved most of its flashy laterals for forwards because it's most direct in gaining the objectivé—the opposing goal— and because Barry is the best| quarterback passer since Benny1 Friedman was heaving 'em to Ben-| ny Oosterbaan for dear old Michi- gan, On the seoond or third play of the game against Army, Wood com- pleted a 50 yard pass to Bernie White. Barry's tosses to Jack Crickard and White later paved the way for two Crimson touch- downs. Texas couidn't stop Wood’s passes altogether and the Long- horns came east with a great rep- utation for checking the air game. Three of Harvard's five touch- downs against Texas were due largely to passes.
