They will be sent south on the steamship Ala- meda, due here Sunday for inter- ment at Tonasket, Wash,, former place of residence of the daceased. Surviving Relatives Mr. Laurie is survived by his widow, Mrs. Margaret Gellatly| Laurie, three daughters and six sons. The daughters and sons are Mrs. Jewett, John Laurie, Jr., and Allen Laurie, of Juneau; Mrs. L. S. Kurtz, Mrs. C. W. Lorz, James E. Laurie, Robert L. Laurie, A. Melvin Laurie and C. Cameron Laurie, all residents of the state| ¢l Washington. Other surviving relatives are a r, Robert Laurie, of Aurora,| a sister, Mrs. Belle Waddell of Long Beach, Cal, 27 grandchil- dren and 2 great grandchildren. Bern In New York State Mr. Laurie was born in Silver Creek, N. Y., March 3, 1852. He was taken by his parents to Madison, Wis,, in 1861. He moved to Ne- braska in 1869. He and Mrs, Laurie were married March 20, 1883. They went to the state of ‘Washington in 1901. CATS KILLED, RODENTS NOW SWARM CITY Lisbon, Oct. 30.—Six months ago Lisbon authorities waged a war of extermination upon the thousands of gaunt, half-starved cats which haunted the streets. Now the same authorities are | | waging a new war on rats. An outbreak of something akin to yellow fever was traced to pol- lution by rats of the water supply in parts of the city. The rodents were found to be carriers of a microbe known as “spirochetoze ictero-hemorragica” and many public fountains have | been closed and other sanitary measures taken to check the dis- ease. Augusta, two hundred miles in- land at the head of navigation on the Savannah river, hopes tobring the Atlantic ocean to her doorstep by dredging the channel to a depth of nine feet. Already a six-foot channel has been authorized by the government. . To demonstrate soundness of a nine-foot channel, Augusta is op- erating a river packet which car- ries 600 bales of cotton weekly to Savannah wharves at a rate of 75 cents per 500-pound bale.
