He has roamed the world in quest of adventure and thrills. On his fiftieth birthday he scaled the heights of Mt, Rainier in Wash- ington, said to be the first member | of congress ever to do so. He has swum the Hellespont over the same course that legend says Leander took nightly in swimming to the side of his beloved Hero. He swam the Tiber at the point where Scipio Africanus is reputed to have jumped-in, wearing full armor. The sewers of Paris, the pyramids, the cathedral of Notre Dame—he has explored them all And he has an appointment on his seventy-fifth birthday to go back and tackle Mt. Rainier again. GETTING ACQUAINTED It is Fitzgerald’s method of fa- miliarizing himself with the places he visits. ‘While visiting Notre Dame cathe- | dral, for example, he wanted to see where Victor Hugo’s famous hunch- back lived. 8o he climbed to the top and lay for several hours high | above Paris. ‘The Tiber always had appealed to him as a place to swim. He made a special trip from Paris to Rome for the attempt. It tcok him two hours to get across because of the swift cur- rent, and he says it is one of the dirtiest swims he has ever had. To this day he finds it difficult | to believe the story about Scipio. He navigated the Hellespont with, the daughter of the American am- bassador to Turkey and the son of the American military attache. | They battled rain' storms and a treacherous , current. Fitzgerald and the girl made it across unaided, but the son of the atache was compelled to cling t0 a boat near the other side. But he ranks his climb up Mt. Rainier as the prize thrill of all. UNDAUNTED Up 10,000 feet he despaired of getting down alive. On several oc- casions he missed death by inches. But he was so elated at his feat that he is anxious to try it again— on his seventy-fifth birthday. “That is,” he says, “if I don't get too fat in the meantime.” Fitzgerald served five trems in the house before the democratic wave in Ohio last November swept him out of office. He was chairman of the house committee on revision of laws at the time of his defeat. He was a captain during the world war and now holds the rank of lieutenant colonel in the infan- try reserve.
