Massive | scenic effects show chambers in an | advanced of disorder, with stone balustrades and pillars fallen into disordered ruins, and the en- ‘tire festooned with cob-webs. There are hair-raising incidents in a graveyard, with a female vampire, risen from her grave, wan- dering disconsolately among the tombstones. Opening sequences depict a picturesque inn in the mountains of Transylvania, and a ‘rocky mountain pass on a foggy night, with wolves howling in the <darkness. Storm at Sea After the story is transferred to England, involving a terrible storm at sea, many scenes are lald in an ancient Abbey leased by Dracula— a location which in its ruined con- struction is greatly reminiscent of the castle in Transylvania. “The Cohens and Kellys in Af-" rica” is a funny story about two piano manufacturers with their wives on an ivory hunting expedi- tion in Africa. Charley Murray and George Sidney have the leading roles supported by Vera Gordon and Kate Price. Native Village Constructed A wooded area on Universal's 350~ acre studio lot in Hollywood was transformed into a jungle with a native village of more than 35 palm thatched huts, especially con- | structed for scenes of this new comedy. The village was built to accommodate 280 natives. The set- ting was patterned after an Afri- can jungle village photographed by the director in 1927. TWO STRIKERS ARE KILLED IN | POLICE CLASH Trouble Occurs in Canad- ian Town—Mounties Are Called Out ESTEVAN, Sask., Sept. 30.—The fatal shooting of two strikers and | the wounding of 12 policemen and 110 civilians is the result of riots | between striking coal miners and the Constabulary forces. | A trainload of Mounties have ar- |rived here from Regina to preserve | order. For almost an hour yesterday the police tried to stop 400 miners who paraded through the streets, de- i spite the police order no march would be permitted. The strikers formed outside of the city limits and the police order- ed a fire truck to spray them. ‘When this failed, after the march had started, the police opened fire. Despite a late start he has hit nearly a score of homers, while his season's average around .340 put him right up among the lead- ing hitters in the senior circuit. Even more spectacular than Haf- ey's improvement has been the comeback of “Sunny Jim"” Bottom- ley, whose late-season slump ha- rassed him throughout the 1930 season. Against Athletic pitchers he was able to scratch one hit in 22 times at bat for the sad average of .045. This season he has led the Na- occasions, playing his old position at first base with all his former dash. To Show Foxx He is out to show Jimmy Foxx, whose .333 average was one of the best in last year's series, that some- times they do come back—better than ever. N Mickey Cochrane, Connie Mack's star receiver, ordinarily swats the, ball at a faster clip than Jimmy Wilson, although the latter's .318 mark last season was hardly to his discredit. In the series Cochrane hit. nhot often but mightily, finding Grimes and Rhem for homers that helped win the first two games. In the field there is little to choose among the rivals. All had perfect records in the 1930 series with the exception of Cochrane, who was charged with one error an average of .967. - e An Englisn raiiway nas equiped |a train in which patrons can take | sun baths while traveling. In addition to the civic organization, Montero was nominated by the liberal, radical, conservative and republican union parties, all major political groups. Montero is a friend of the United 'States and othev roreign countries; he says Chile will pay every cent of her debts if he is elected. He is re- lic in its present grave crisis. Arturo Alessandri, former presi- dent recently returned from exile, is the other candidate with the larg- est popular following but his politi- cal strengwv. lis year is untested. Exiled twice within one term, ‘Alessandri counts the “roto,” or lower class citizen as his friend. He is anti-foreign, and an opponent of the “cosach” nitrate combine. GRUMPY" TO BE SUGCEEDED BY TOM SAWYER' j:]ackie Coogan Has Title Role in Play Founded on Mark Twain Story With “Grumpy,” starring Cyril Maude, showing for the last times tonight at the Coliseum theatre, “Tom Sawyer,” with Jackie Coogan in the title role, will he the head- |line attraction tomorrow night. “Grumpy” is the story of a grouchy but benevolent old man, a retired eriminal lawyer who lives | with his charming granddaughter | {near London. Both Love Virginia Both these visitors are in love with Virginia, the granddaughter. | One of them, Heron, is in posses- sion of a very valuable diamond which he is taking to a mer¢hant in London from his employers in South Africa. Jarvis, the other guest, is a so- ciety ne'er-do-well. During the night Heron is at- tacked and robbed of the diamond. Suspicion is thrown on Jarvis, but no proof of his guilt can be found. |Grumpy leads in the sleuthing, { which takes him to London and back to his home again in the amusing but thrilling pursuit of the villain. The canny and canker- ous old man finally gets the cul- prit and the stolen property, and Phillips Holmes as Heron gets | the girl, Frances Dade. Authors of Original Play The original play was written by | Horace Hodges and Thomas Wigney | Percyval. Doris Anderson authored the screen version. “Tom Sawyer,” a Paramount pic- | ture, is based on Mark Twain's fa- mous book, “The Adventures of { Tom Sawyer.” In the screen ver- ysion of the story, Jackie Coogan and Mitzi Green are the heavy lovers.
