HANNUM Member ofaw of Coast Guard Cutter Alert, Dies at Ketchikan Boatswain C. B. Hannum, aged 48, executive officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Alert, died recently at Ketchikan as the result of heart | disease. He is survived there by his widow Mrs. Ethel Hannum, and two chil- dren, Rober 13, and Philip, 12. They will accompany the body to Lynn, Massachusetts, where interment will be made. Later Mrs. Hannum plans to go to Provincetown, Massachus- etts, where she will make her fu- ture home with the children. Prov- incetown was Mr. Hannum's home town. Mr. Hannum entered the coast guard service in 1924, serving in the offshore patrol force on the east coast out of Boston until 1927. From 1927 until his death he served on the Alert, going to Ket- chikan recently when that boat was stationed there. He served in the United States navy during the World War, being appointed ensign on the U. S. S. Manchuria in 1918. Later he was ’nnmed a lieutenant, junior grade, in the second naval division. Sub- sequently he was transferred to the U. S. S. Nereus as navigator. In 1920 he was named lieutenant, still serving aboard the Nereus.
