U Rights Reserved by The Assoclated Pres: 6’ LAN GOULD ~ Just before the recent sectional qualifying tests for the approach- ing National amateur golf cham- pionship it apeared to me that es- pecially formidable prospects for the Chicago tournament were Phil- ip Perkins, Johnny Goodman and Don Moe. Moe did not make the grade, and 1 am surprised and grieved. His ex- perience shows up with an almost shocking clarity a weakness in the new sectional system of qualifica- tion. Of course it is always wise to suspect a weakness in any new plan or new mechanism. Or any new golf prodigy, for that matter. It takes time and experience and changing situations and circum- stances, to establish sterling worth. It didn't take a lot of time, how- ever, to show up a sterling fault in the new regional system of qualifi- cation for the National Amateur Championship. That Is, it took only one time. The Method The number of qualifiers in any one section or district is based on the number of entrants. In this re- cent test, the proportion was ap- proximately one out of three. Twelve entrants, four qualifiers. » TFifty entrants, 16 qualifiers. That way. The total entry list as compared with 150—the number of players who can be handled properly in the qualifying rounds at the cham- pionship course — established the proportion. I think the require- ment for entry was a handicap of + # not worse than four strokes. |ciuded here. It 35 a record for the SRS EESS S OR.. \ So it came about (there being a | great many four-handicap players in nearly every district now) that in the Northwest, centered on Se- attle, there was a small but ex- tremely select entry list; while at| Detroit, just as an example, there was a very large entry list, not so select. At Detroit, one entrant qualified | with a score of 164, or a couple of cards of 82, while at Seattle Don Moe, with 149, was left out. Seat of Moe’s Woe Now, there is no conceivable meth- | od by which the justice of qualify- ing one man with a score 15 strokes worse than another, who is not qualified, can be established. I do! not expect to see the 164—person| do very much at Beverly, beginning August 31. But he will be there, And Don Moe will not. That is Qquite wrong. M The Northwest, with the Moes and the Dolps and Doc Willing and Bon Stein and Hogan and Shields and a number of other players I could mention, doubtless could form a 12-man team which would clean a similar team of amateurs from | any other sectior of the United| States. Why there was not a greater number of good four-handicap golf- ers entered along with this brilliant crew is not so much of a mystery —the good, plain cooking-golfers knew darned well they had nol® chance to qualify, with scores of 80 or worse. Don Moe didn’t quali- fy with scores of 75 and 74. That really is too bad. Naturally something will” be done about it, before next season. It's just an- other headache for the good .old U. 8. G. A, doing the best it can. — e WELLINGTON, New Tealand,| Aug. 25.—Hector Gray, New Zea-| land’s veteran jockey rode 116 win- ners in the season which has con- PRINTING AND STATIONERY Desk Supplies—Ink—Desk Sets— Blotters—Office Supplies Geo.
