L i ANICE-GII COMES - TO TOWN SYNOPSIS: They called Mary Lou Leclie a “nicc girl” when cthe came from her country hceme to Londen, and has de- termined to live down that reputation. Last summer she loved Brynmor Whittamore, but he has become infatuated with Clarice Day, a dancer. He | deserted Mary Lou at a night club and she meets Tony Tith- crington, a wealthy young avia- tor. He travels in a rather fast set gnd asks Mary Lou to at- tend several parties with him. Her cousin, who has a dress | thop, outfits Mary Lou in the latest gowns. Tony tells Mary Lou that his ambition is to make a record flight around | the world. He wants his Aunt Ethelberta, who is immensely wealthy, to finance the project, |L but she refuses to back him while he assoclates with girls of whom she does not approye. Chapter 10 TONY’S HOPES Tony did not tell Mary Lou that| his real object in taking her to| visit his aunt was the hope of per-| suading her that he was rushing a really nice girl for a change. Instinctively, he felt that Aunt Ethelberta would like Mary Lou Once, he remembered, he had taken Gwendolyn down for a week-end. The experiment had almost fin- ished him fot good with Aunt Eth- elberta. 2 ‘Boys, here’s-a new girl Gwendolyn had smoked one cig- arette after another, laughing at Aunt Ethelberta’s objections. And on Saturday night, when they were about to retire, Aunt Ethelberta had suggested a cup of tea to Gwendolyn. “Tea? No thanks,” she had an- swered, “but a good stiff bracer of whisky and soda would do the trick.” That was too much for. Aunt Ethelberta. “If you marry that girl,” she had threatened Tony afterward, “I'll cut off your allowance!" ‘Tony had smiled. “How often do I have to tell you that I've no intention of mar- rying her—or any girl.” “And I have every intention that you shall marry,” Aunt Ethelberta had retorted. “I don't approve of young men living on their own in this godforsaken age. But it's going to be a gifl of whom I approve. And I don't care whether her fa- ther's Lord High Chancellor or a rallway porter!” “But Aunt Ethelberta is a good scout, really,” Tony told Mary Lou as they drove home from Gwendo- | lyn’s party. “In lots of ways she's been won- derful to me. She's had me under her wing ever since I lost my own people. . Dad wds killed trying to set. a new auto speed record in the States, you know. Mother was in the gmndsund when it happened. If only she had known him and could have comforted him then! , Bhe reached out a timid hand ‘qd touched his sleeve “Pm—T' sorry” she whispered, and felt how inadequate that hack- neyed phrase sounded. + “Thanks, Mary Lou.” ened his abruptness by “You're a sweet kid.” “That's why," he added “I've &wrmlned neverr——" But he did pot finish, the sentence. Instead he switched the conversation back to Aunt Ethelberta. “The old dreadful ; for | was staring road. ‘a kid when He soft- adding, NICE-GIRL: ZOMES-TO-TOWN 7 'd Bg_Meysie Graels ) |chosen to tell her so much of his he said. “It will be different than these other affairs. I'll have to pay him and insure him, too, in case there's a wife and kids. I do hope Aunt Ethelberta will .come across, I'm crazy to do it. Well, here we are. Hope you haven't been bored?” “Bored? Of course not!” Mary Lou told him. Secretly she was dqlighted that Tony should have connection family and his past. Declining her request that he come in, Tony said he must be “pushing home.” “Don't forg the studio party at Lorna Grey's tomorrow night,” “1:know I shall enjoy, it,” Mary Lou assured him. The crowd at Lorna Grey's studio party was gay and reckless. For the most part it was a pseudo-ar- tistic set—painters who' never quite found' time for their masterpieces, ed unwritten while they drank cocktails; fashion models, and a sprinkling of society girls. Brynmor first had met Clarice at one of these parties. It was her sort of atmosphere. ~There always was a stir when she arrived after her last dance at theé Emerald Occasionally, when Clarice wished to impress some man who was present, she would -consent to for you,” Lorna announced dance. Lately she had danced to please Brynmopr. It. 'was not surprising that Bryn- mor. should be at Lorna Grey's party that night. Young stock brokers, like himself, thought them- selves no end of a devil when in- cluded in these shows. The party was well under way when Mary Lou and Tony arrived. Lorna greeted them by clapping her hands to command the crowd's attention. “Boys, here's a new girl for you —Mary Lou Leslie” she cried. “Someone bring her a drink.” A week ago no one would have (noticed Mary Lou at any party. Two nights with Tony, however, had given her fresh confidence in herself and a semblance of sophis- tication, = And Jay had put on the finishing touches with clothes of | the smartest cut. A dozen men crowded around iMary Lou as Lorna introduced her. Tony had told her that she looked “subtly .mysterious” in the black velvet tea gown which Jay had lent Her. Brynmor was standing moodily in one corner apart from the crowd. He had been waiting expectantly for Clarice to appear. When she {came, he would share the glory {of her popularity. The one girl Brynmor didn't ex- lPect was Mary Lou. Tony was the first to spot mgn, Brynnor, at the sight of the new arrivhls, Had half turned away fro the dancers to talk ‘with a vi- vaciolls , brunet. “Jove.” 'Tony. exclaimed. . “Afe my eyes deceiving me? Oriis that ,thc dear old chap we left lying on lthe dance floor at the Emerald Dragon the night of the raid?” Mary Lou was startled. She |100ked in the direction Tony had | indicated. “Why, it is Brynmor, to be sure,” she laughed. “What a lark!” , (Copyright, 1930, Maysie Grgig) Brynmor's pride is thorough- ly sguelched—in tomorrow’s chapter. : e | TO TELEPHONE PATRONS A new telephone directory. is now in course of preparation.
