S o oy B Gy WO THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, FRIDAY, MAY 2, 1930. SYNOPSIS: Allan Hunt, an- tique dealer, senses sinister mystery and terror in the San Lucas Island home of Dan Parados, wealthy unscrupulous man of affairs. Arriving to in- spect Parades’ art collection, he catches a strange young girl trying to steal one of Parados’ pictures. She captivates him. Another stranger, the suave Anatele Flique, appears and ar- gues the girl, Caroline Brent, into staying for dinmer that night. Parados bought his art collection from her mily. Flique tactfully brings Caroline fnto the houschold, arranging for her to borrow a gown from Celia Ferris, Parados’ secretary. Hunt meets Professor Johns, custodian of an old fort on the island, just before the party cnters the dining room. Parados has said he won't attend din- ner. The head of the table was vacant. We were served by the virtuous-looking maid who had ad- mitted me to the house. Her name was Manning, it seemed. It was like sitting at a Iunnral: breakfast. FliGue, whom 1 had; learned was the cleverest detective on the Paris Surete, was the only one who appeared completely in command of himself. “An excellent soup, madame,” Flique observed. “I have a good cook,” Mrs, Para- dos admitted. “The admirable Lum We. You acquired him in California?” “Mr. Parados brought him from Honolulu. My husband usually en- gages the servants.” “Madame is saved a grave re-| sponsibility,” Fligue murmured. “I don’t wish to evade responsi- bility!” The assertion burst in our faces like a ball of light, illuminating the hatred in the woman's heart. “Ah, responsibility,” said Anatole Flique. “And the dictionaries de- fine it as so and so. But what are dictionary definitions, I ask you? N'est-ce-pas, M. le Professeur?” Johns nodded. “Words are dan- gerous tools.” “Who is to be e viet “One whom w 1 kaow is not of our number your husband.” “Oh, Dan!” Mrs ironically. “He'd X sure. You are the dc Anatole Flique twirled his mus tache. ‘U'nless there is another agent of la Surete.” Mrs. Parados laughed. “If the rest of you are agreeable, I com mission M. Flique to discover who murdered my husband.” Mrs. Parados seemed rather keen about the game. I had been watch- ing Annersley, too. His right hand lay clenched upon the table; the fingers of his left were plucking at the yellow rose in the lapel of his coat. When he spoke, his voice was icy. “Do you think we ought to do this, Mrs. Parados? You know how Mr. Parados feels about death. It “The destroyers of empires!”}is the one thing he is afraid of.” Anatole Flique continued vehement- 1y. “Yet every man has his little interpretation, dictionaries to the— um —that word, M. le Antiquarie?” “Contrary,” 1 ventured. “Precisement! Liberty, now,” he proceeded. “A brave word, that, and beloved by la belle France, but to the Russian, to the Italian, s its meaning the same?” He paused. “Is it the same, shall we say,” and he shrugged negligently, “to le Belafre and Ciceron Bec?” “Who are le Belafre and Ciceron Bec?” Mrs. Parados inquired. Anatole Flique was relishing his food and he made us wait. “They were quite infamous crim- inals of France,” he said. “Seven months ago they escaped from I'Tle du Diable, where France sends her| bad little ones. And they have not been caught.” Flique surveyed us, his eyes as cold as marbles. “We spoke of liberty. To le Belafre, the Bcarred One and to Ciceron Bcc? 3t must have been a madn Mmadness eating into their brain.” v 1 recalled the affair, but what possible connection could there be between any one of our group. Flique, alone excepted, and two Hugitives to whom “liberty was a mmadness eating into the brain?” What was an agent of the Paris Burete doing here? I shuddered. Anatole Flique put down his glass.| “Madame,” he inquired, “have I, your permission to propose a little diversion?” Mrs. Parados nodded. “Do you mean some sort of a game?” «“Mais oui. It is this way,” Ana- tole Flique began. “Two months .olflmewl'e"fotk In the fome of one of those higherbrows ‘on the Long Island we play a make- ‘believe - “Dan will have to put up with it, then,” she announced -caustically. “He should have come in to dinner. How about the rest of you?” Professor Johns had been polish- ing his glasses with his napkin. “I haven't any personal objection to the game,” he said. “But I be- lieve Mr. Annersley is right. Mr. Parados has an abnormal horror of death. I have known him for over 20 years. He is afraid of no man, but he is afraid of death. It seems that we should respect his feelings.” “When did Dan ever respect any- one’s feelings?” Mrs. Parados de- manded scornfully. “Be a sport, Claude” Celia drawled. “It's only a game.” Annersley sat down, for no man likes to be made a fool of by the girl he loves. “We are ready, M. Flique,” Mrs. Parados announced, a hard light in her eyes. “Why not begin with Mr. Annersley?” (Copyright, 1930, William Morrow and Company) Watch the clever Flique play his “game” of murder in this house of hate, tomorrow. e RICHARDSON IN HOSPITAL E.
