This represents an in- crease of $5,165,048.91 or approxi- mately 20 per cent as compared with net earnings in the preceding year. A substantial part of this large increase in net earnfhgs for 1929 may be attributed to the insreased popularity of Lucky Strike Cigar- sttes, arising from extensive ad- vertising of the merits cf the toast- ing process. With the exception of 1923, net earnings of the Company have zained continuously since 1920. The 1929 statement of earnings ncludes only the dividends re- seived from those companies in | which The American Tobacco Com- pany owns only part of the stock, but includes the total net profits for the yecar of companies whose stock is all owned by or held in frust for the Company. | Net income applicable to su p'u ¢ amounted' for the year to $27018 622,12 as compared with $21 B:z_- 451.85 for 1928.
