COPHERS ARE BESTED BY U. S. IN ARIZONA Alaskan Satuim Geldea. Zynda W. C. Lawrence. _ |Reimer, PHOENIX, Arizona, Dec. 11.—A| queer little rat-like animal cost the farmers of Arizona thousands of dol- lars annually until the United States Biological survey stepped in. Now the survey workers, of which there are a dozen or more with} headquarters at Phoenix, have built up a trophy pile of nearly 10{),000‘l enemies’ tails, evidence of animals | trapped in the campaign. Perhaps! twice that number have been poi- | soned. | The animal is commonly known as a pocket gopher because of hisl jaw pockets. In these he places the dirt he digs and carries it to the sur- face to get it out of his way. He! lives underground and comes to the surface only to throw up mounds of | dirt removed from his subterranean runways. Although harmless to humans, the | pocket gopher is highly destructive of growing things. His great concave teeth cut through the largest of roots or trees, if the wood pulp suits his| taste. He is fond of cutting off roots of rose bushes, ornamental| shrubs, palm trees and damaging the | fruit bearing crops. Frequently he builds his subter- ranean streets and highways under man’s automobile roads, and inevi- ve-in occurs, leaving a “chuck” hole in which ' ak car wheels and springs | Ridding the farms of these pesis has proved a problem not alone in Arizona but in other western states! as well. The biological survey, how- | ever, has had marked success both ! with poison and with spring: traps and it gradually is getting the up- | per hand. ’ e ———— | CENTRAL HEATING FOR DULUTH 2 ’ DULUTH, Minn, Dec. 11—This| city has approved the construction,’ of a $1,250,000 ceniral heating | plant, work to begin next year..
