Dealers for Alaska and Yukon Territory Information gladly furnished from any Nocthern Commercial Company Store i AMONG THE By EDWARD J. NEIL (Associated Press Sports Writer) NEW YORK, Sept. 11.—They're carving a special niche in the fistic hall of fame for “Keed” Choco- late, grinning negro boy from Cuba, the “fightinest” bit of dusky ring machinery since the day$ of George Dixon and Joe Gans. A year ago the ebony enigma, still a shade under 20 years old though he claims officially to have reached his majority, drifted into New York from Havana, unaccom- panied by any of the trumpeting of the ballyhood horns that usually greets leather pushing invaders. The “Keed” was more than pleased to fight as often as anyone would use him for $50 per fight. Today the situation is somewhat different. The picturesque choco- late drop, elusive as a smoky shadow, swift, keen, and a deadly accurate puncher, has climbed the popularity trail so rapidly that his {last pay check was slightly over 1$50,000 for disposing of Al Singer, the second Benny Leonard in the eyes of Jewish fandom. { The “Keed” has a ring person- lality to couple with his fighting |ability that has made him an |amazingly popular figure. His body glistens black under the ring flood lights like a slender, polish staff of black maple. His wide smile, chang- ing quickly to a grim snarl when ithe going gets’ rough, bares glist- |ening white teeth and he rolls the whites of his eyeballs in apprecia- }tinn when in rare moments an opponent reaches him with solid \“KEED” CHOCOLATE TOPS PROSPECTS MALLER MEN OF BOXING punch. Chocolate, Eligio Sardin |er grow out of the featherweight |elass with its limit of 128 pounds. |He has matured rapidly, though outdoor training may build up whose real name is the lightweight division. In his present class, however, there is little opposition for him. The smiling “Keed” has whipped almost every man of importance in {the bantamweight class and his de- |cisive victory over Singer, one of the very best of the little fellows jdevelped in many years, stamps him as the outstanding feather- weight. Singer only a little while ago knocked out Andre Routis, the 126-pound Kir non-title scrap. In ring technique, Chocolate com- |pares favorably with any of the great negro masters who have pre- ceded him. He is a grand counter fighter, able to feint the smartest |opponents into making his sort of ‘bettle and just the proper openings for his best punches. When the |opening comes the “Kced” drives his leather home with the speed of a spear thrust. Within another |year or so he has the opportunity {of stamping himself the greatest of lall negro a worthy succes- sor to the flitting shadaws that |have dominated- the ring ‘at ‘rare | intervals. e e — Try & HUL LAaMALR al%er the show.
