Delayed and Flat Stall The flat stall offense made itself so unpopular with the specta- tors that it evolved into a more polite form of stalling—the delayed | offensive. Now, when a team procures a small lead, late in the | game, t style of offense is most popular in all sections of the country, with the possible exception of the far west. The flat stall is utterly devoid of action. It is purely a defensive mechanism. The delayed offensive resembles the flat-stall. But it only lurks for an opportunity to put the play on by means of a quick thrust brought about by a floor bounce, a pass or a dribble for goal. uri KEEPS YOUNE STRIBLING ON - MOTHER EARTH games, Jack Dempsey Gets Out Injunction Against Boxer Flying MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Feb. 6.— Young Stribling does not expect to shuttle guard, the delayed, and the straig fly until he has kept his February 1 their many variations, are the sum total of basketball offenses 27 bout with Jack Sharkey. The present ciga- rette consumption is at the rate of about 203,000 cigarettes every min- ute. Enlarging upon this theory, A. E. Hamilton, author and former pupil of Professor Hall, suggests in the North American Review that an echo of the primitive delight in fire and spiraling smoke may jus- {tity almost a divine obligation forl smoking among both sexes. Carrying these explanations of the immense increase in cigarette smoking one step farther, the en- richment of flavor resulting from the added process of subjecting tobaccos to high temperatures may be traced back to delight in the feagrant incense of past civiliza- tions, “For countless generations wom- an has been guardian of the hearth” Hamilton writes. “And (now that civilization has impris. oned the fire spirit down in the hbasement and its comforting warmth comes to us through a series of tubes and gilded radiators is it a great wonder that women have begun to welcome the ember- glow -and smoke rings of the lit- tle cigarettes?” —— Commercial job printing at The Empire.
