WEBSTER A number of inquiries have heen made at the office of the Telephone Company within the past few days regarding the tapping of telephone wires by the Prohibition Officers. In explanation of this we feel it is due our patrons to state that the Telephone Company has not given and will not give permission to the Pro- hibition Officers, or anyone else to tap or other- interfere with telephone wires. wish to give every assistance to the offi- cers in enforcing all the laws including the pro- hibition law, but no law authorizes us to permit any of the officers to interfere with the telephone service of our patrons, Considerable misundertsanding seems to have developed as a result of a recent case tried in the District Court, and in explanation of this we wish to state that the wires which- were ‘interfered with in this case were in the apartments of the Prohibi- tion Officers themselves; that is to say, they did not interfere with the service of any other patrons. Even this was without the sanction of the te?ephone company and it was not authorized, and no such procedure will be authorized by the company. The Telephone Company is a public service corpora- tion. The wires and telephones and all appliances belong to the company ang are rented to subserib- ers, and no subscriber has any right to interfere with the service, nar to change the service which the company furnishes, without permission of the company, This is made a misdemeanor by Section 1 _of Chapter 53 of the Session Laws of Alagka of 1919, .
