The cotton crop promises well, with good returns. The manufacturing industry on the Pacific Coast continues to ex- pand in a material way, through branches of eastern companies h-- ing enlarged or established hera. ‘The industries of local control are also in a period of prosperous ex. pansion. Early in 1928 there was some evidence of dullness in business, but no material recession in ¢ parison with the corresyouding period of 1927. Livestock and sheep industries are in a healthy condition and with reduction in stock and increase in mining the copper and other non-ferrous tal industries showed improve- ment. In the Pacific Northwest and in the Mountain States the romewhat unfavorable agricu'tural nfluences changed for the better and with midsummer a reasonably good sca- son was in sight or had been con- | cluded. Employment increased. The retail trade in this section as a whole is now keeping above the level of last year though there are some weak spots. In the section west of the Rocky Moun-! tains the relation of output to de- mand has been better than during 1927, Sxpansion of commerce between the western states and of foreign markets is growing at a rate not generally known. In the last six years the exports through Pacific ports have grown more than 60 per cent, notwithstanding the in- creased competition throuzh (he use of the Panama Canal irect. This year promises to break all records. ‘While, in common with rail ‘0aas in all parts of the country the passenger ‘traffic in tha west show decreases compared with last year the volume of freight traffic has increased materially. Altogether we look for a sub- stantial increase in voluma of bus iness and prosperity of our peopic west of the Rockies duriuz the last half of 1928. —e———— RKECORDS Dlosing out alt 1v muca Columbia and Okeh Records at §0c each Open evenings. Ten committee members announced they would vote for Hoover. A militant campaign to pre- serve the party intact is occupy- ing the State Demoratic Execu- tive Committee, which plans to use conciliation and persuasion as its weapons. EARLY DAY BOXERS BEST, SAY PROMOTERS Skt SAN FRANCISCO, Oct s Twenty-six years of ste: promoting of boxing has ¢ vinced Al Young that the old time boxers were much moere clever than those to- day. He attributes this to the fact that interest was great- er in amateur boxing then and that there were more instructors. When Battling Nelson won the lightweight title from Joe Gans, he says that most of the aspiring youngsters changed from boxers to slug- gers. Young has promoted fights longer than anyone on the coast. BUFFALOES ARE CHAMPS, SOUTH BIRMINGHAM, Ala.. Oct. 4.
