When the fishing sea- son was ordered closed by the Bureau of Fisheries on the 4th of August, most of the local canneries did not plan to begin operations again when the ban was to be lifted. Owing to the extremely rough weather on the inlet, and the scarcity of salmon, the Gorman cannery here, which started fall packing season decided that the venture was a failure. At many of the traps the sea was so vio- lent that the large tenders could not approach near enough'to the cows to take off the fish. Fish- ermen experienced great difficulty and loss with their traps and nets, as it was almoSt imporsible to retain their lifts in the rough water. They also reported that the run of salmon was decidedly below normal.
