VESSELS (A. P. Sports Writer) NEW YORK, Sept. 7.—A couple of new arrivals in New York's bulging ranks of box fighters has helped to stimulate interest in the fistic game hereabouts. They are Roberto Roberti, six. foot, four-inch heavyweight hope, and Tommy Grogan, the dashing young Omaha lightweight with a heavyweight wallop. Roberti won on a foul from Johnny Risko, the banging baker from Cleveland. That victory meant no more to boxing men than any other victory from a foul blow, but Roberti's improve ment as a fighter did mean some. thing to them, and they have been praising him ever since. The Italian clouter did nothing during the fight that bothered Risko then, but he showed enough promise to indicate he might prove hard for Risko or any other fight er to beat a few months hence. Metropolitan fans rememberad Roberti as just another prelimi mary fighter of a year ago. Now they are talking of him as cham- pionship material, Grogan's debut here Wwas de. cidedly more impressive when it ecomes to rating on the basis of what he did instead of what might do. Flashing a deadly left hook, Tommy stopped Fernandc Fiorello, a tough local boy, before the sound of the opening zorg had died away. That victory placcd alon; technical knockout of the rugged Billy Petrolle gives Tommy quite a record. So the mosn's hoping for an opening to n him with Jimmy McLarnin $. But Grogan's handlers are back- ing up on that for the same rea- son that Roberti’s manager is jug- gling offers of a match with Ja“k Sharkey. They don’t want to pit their young proteges against rien experience. of such overwhelmingly great Matching Roberti with Geor: Godfrey and Grogan with Ray Mil./ ler, Chicago slugger, has been suggested as the best step the building up process.
