That's what critics and fans are koing to call Emil Jannings, the motion picture giant of Kurope, after they see “Variety,” in which he is featured with Lya de Putti “Variety” opens on a scene in which Jannings is shown—an old ‘map, discouraged with life. He been a prisoner. for twenty long years and now is about to be freed. It doesn't require much imagination to describe the way he looks. Then, as he tells his story of the warden, we “flash back,” and Jannings is seen as a4 young ‘man—Boss, the world’s greatest acrobat. 'On seeing the transformation, it will be hard to believe that both are the same man. But then when one remembers his appear- ance in such films as “The Last Lauygh,” “Passion” and “Quo Va. dis,” the thing seems more prob- able. It would appear that at last, a challenger for the crown Lon Chaney has worn so long, has come out of the wast. Paramount is releasing “Varie. ty.” It was made in Germany by Director E. A. Most pictures having two love affairs that run parallel in the plot, use one as a comedy-relief, “the other as serious romance. There are two very amusing love affalrs that vie with each other in comedy moments. The principal one is hetween the star, Babe Ruth, and Anna Q. Nilsson, who, with Louise Fazenda, is fea- tpred in the picture; the second affair is between Kthel Shannon and Lou Archer. The romance between the fa- mous slugger and the blonde film star is said to be one of the most novel love affairs ever devised by the resourceful scenarists.
