Y Republican leaders are fearful that gant and untruthful attacks on the char Gov. Smith are aiding the New York E in the Presidential campaign They hae done their best to smother the attacks, mostly whisp- ered from mouth to ear but here and there breaking out into public print or utterance, that involve his character and good faith. They recall the outcome of the attacks of young Col. Theodore Roosevelt when the latter was a candidate against Gov. Smith in New York id which, admittedly, contributed to the latter's majority and the elimination of the scion of the Great Teddy as a political factor. cter of ecutive The political preachers are probably the most persistent vilifiers of Gov. Smith and mst care- less regarding the authenticity of their attacks. An example is the following, among many of the same class, from the “clipsheet” of the Methodist Board of Temperance, Prohibition and Public Morals: Governor Al Smith of New York must and will be defeated, not because he heads the Democratic ticket, but be- cauge he is the candidate of the bi- partisan saldon-nullification cabal The people do not have to be told how unfair is such an attack, for they know that Gov. Smith has repeatedly said that the saloon is “defunct,” and that no one wants it back. He has said that the Volstead Act ought to be modified in the interest of temperance 1d law and order, and the people know that Gov. Smith always voices| his exact position on all guestions, That is one of the foundations of his unexampled popularity and is a potent factor in his wonderful achieve- ments, W. W. Jermane, associate editor of the Seattle Times and strong supporter of Mr. Hoover, in a recent article in his paper, declared that if at- tacks continue on Gov. Smith involving his pro- hibition views, his religion, his character and the circumstance that his forebears were immigrants (one of his grandparents and two great-grand- parents came from Ireland) it will mean that Mr. Hoover will have a difficult time of it to win. He continued: The religious issue will cut both ways. The great majority of the people are Protestants, but it is a nice question whether even one-third-of them are of the extreme fundamentalist type. * * * There are millions of citizens loose connected with the Protestant church the great independent group—who be- long to no church, and will view the situation rcalistically. Many of them—it would aid our thinking if we knew how many—will vote for Smith because of the characater of the attacks being made upon him.
