Kolehmainen, Nurmi and Ritola ~are the Big Three so far as the history of the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races is concerned. Nurmi and Ritola will be back again this year, seeking fresh laurels at Am- sterdam, and there doesn’t seem any prospect of headirg off either of these stars. Certainly the United States isn't likely to upset the parade of the | Finns although the development | of such youthful stars as Leo Ler mond of Boston, Dave Abbott of | Illinois and Harold Keith of Okla homa may give America thy| chance to score a few points. France alone has given the Finns a real tussle in either of these long distance features sinc they first were put on the pro- gram. Hannes Kolehmainen, first of the great Finnish champions, | scored a “double” in 1912 but he| had a hair-raising duel with Jean Bouin of France:' before winning the 5,000-meter race on the Stock- holm track. From all accounts that 5,000 meter final 16 years ago was one of the greatest distance races ever run. Bouin, who has a stadium named after him in Paris now, ‘set the pacé most of the way and | fought oft Kolehmainen’s chal- lenges right down to the stretch,| “With only 20 meters left,” runs the official story, “the Finlander pressed up abreast’ of Bouin, who now, possibly involuntarily be-| cause of the unheard-of strain of the race, pressed Kolehmainen out to the right hand side of the track while, at the same time, he did lemot, broke the Finnish streak ln‘ 1920 by beating Nurmi, then only| 19 years old, in the 5,000/meter race at Antwerp and handing Paavo his only Olympic setback. Nurmi got revenge on Guillemot in the 10,000-meter race. In 1924, Paavo broke the Olympic record in the 5,000 but stayed out of the 10,000 meter event, which went to Willie Ritola in record-smashing fashion. Second place is the best an American. has ever gained in either of these races. Lewis Te- wanima, the Indian, was runner- up to Kolehmainen in the 10,000- | meter race in 1912.
