DETAILS OF DEATH OF LOCAL MAN RECEIVED| Additional details have been re- celved here of the death of Radio| Man Lonergan, former Juneau and Seward man, who, with Lieut. Rhea, was killed in a seaplan: accident “spotting” torpedoes ofi Point Loma, California, on Febru- ary 8, last. Lonergan was former- ly a radio man at the local gov- ernment wireless station. He and Lieut. Rhea were spot- ting torpedoes, which means after a torpedo is fired and has become | exhausted, it floats near the sur face, and the plane locates it for the ship by “zooming,” or diving to within a few feet of the water directly over the torpedo; the ship immediately comes and picks it up. It is said by men who saw the accident, that the plane had ‘“zoomed” the torpedo and was up about 400 feet, when Rhea made a left turn as though to zoom again. He apparently did not have sufficient speed and the plane .went into a spin. Not having enough altitude to gain control, they turned, or spun around twice and hit the water THE EMPIRE 18 THE MEDIUM Through which. . the nn:aul public ‘can always' have it wanty .
