Certainly the political questions that will be pressing for discussion are of a kind to call for thoughtful .treatment, They-are partly economie, and-the very size of sthe Miancial issués ought to keep the disputants modest and cool. Then there are highly important public polteies, both domestic and foreign, which require calm ex- planation and intelligent debate. John Stuart Mill once said that he had great faith in the ability of the American people to understand the most important political matters, and to form rapidly a sound opinion about them, provided |they had been fairly and reasonably presented. This implies, of course, that there should be fair 1 reasonable debate by public men on 5. May we have it this year! Farmers Are Warned. (Cincinnati Enquirer.) Editorial condemnation of the proposed Fed- eral school bill distinguishes the current issue of the influential Farm Journal. The editor does not mince words. He warns the farmers of Am- erica to use their influence to prevent ‘“‘the Prus- sianizing of our schools,” as the Curtis-Reed bill designs to do. The Farm Journal points to the apparently harmless appearance of this scheme, “‘devised to add another useless, extravagant and arbitrary Government bureau to the burden of the tax- gy lhe Enquirer has opposed this legislation since its first proposal. 1t still opposes. it, be- it is wrong and vicious legislation, un- omic and undemocratic the Farm Journal comment asserts, this scheme is alleged hy supporters not to be one with purpose to standardize or control local schools, or to subsidize the States with Federal money, but the Journal pertinently inquires of such supporters, as The Enquirer has asked: “What guarantees they give that these develop- ments will not follow?" They can give none. And we all know the history and tendency of Government bureaucracy. We already have too much of it for the well- being of the country. Next to an ecc esiastically controlleq ment of government, the worst thing that could happen would be to have one controlled and dom- inated by the ultra-pedagogic type of mind. This entire proposition is monstrous; its po- tentialities for evil gravely alarming. We don't want any Ggvernment school policeman or arbi- trary dictators who see things from one angle alone. We want home rule for the schools of America, depart- can and are trusting the intelligent manhood and womanhood of the nation to gee to it that we shall have just that. —_— At a recent private discussion as to what var- lous statesmen might be fitted for after their carer in the public service, it was agreed Mr. i‘en would make a dandy draft clerk.
