Both were being carried rapidiy down the river ,in momentary danger of being dashed to deathi| against projecting rocks. Seeing the plight of the strug- gling men, Lieutenant Gamble, who was on the bank of the river, called to Captain Beall, who was nearby, and then himself plunged in and swam to the rescue. Cap- tain Beall recognized at once that all three were in danger of being lost, and with a marked presence of mind rushed to a gmall uproot- ed tree fifty yards down the bank. | This he seized and shoved into the current just in time to permit Lieutenant Gamble to grasp its extreme branches. As the threc men in the stream were holding to each other, they reached the] bank in safety. ———-——— ' WATSON MAIL CLERK ILL IN FIRST CITY The regular m clerk on the steamer Admiral Watson wos taken from the ship at Ketchikan and placed ‘in the hospital whe'e! he underwent an operation fu.-{ | throat trouble, it was made known | |h) officers of the ship when she arrived here Saturday evening.
