How this s Bt n varal Hinh At the time of ““, filgure compares with the corresponding outlay of Al )TOS FOR H - joint debate on Prohibition between himself an|1927 he does not say, but the one might be y Phone 244 W » 1 Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, President of Colum- bia University, at Boston, Senator Borah chal- lenged Dr. Butler to debate the question with him at the next Republican National Convention and the latter accepted the Mallcuge. Senator Borah has several times :'nce ihen declared that both National Conventions ought to consider the matter, and he has indicated that he will be satisfied with nothing less than a direct ex- pression on the subject by the Republicans. Now come accounts in the New York papers of a din- ner at the Union League Club in New York at- tended by 300 wet Republicans at which the prin- cipal speakers were former Senator James W. Wadsworth of New York, Dr. Butler, Senator Walter E. Edge of New Jersey and recently elected Congressman James M. Beck, famous orator-lawyer of Philadelphia and late Solicitor- General of the United States, all well known wet Republicans. While the dinner was private and the papers do not quote the speeches that were made they say that all were wringing wet and all discussed the desirability of forcing the Republican National Convention to take action on the question. The New York Times quotes former Senator Wadsworth as saying to reporters just after the meeting: 1 a a candidate for delegate at large I fully expect to be one of the cight delegates at large from this State to the Republican National Con- vention. 1 trust that there may be nm other delegates at the convention believe with me that the prohibi law should be wiped out or modilied 1 sincerely hope that our natiopal con- vention will meet thay issue. Tt is here 1 for one propose to meet it Of course, the issue will be made in the Republican National Convention, if 1 have anything to say about it. PAN-AMERICAN CONGRESS. That the Administration attaches considerable portance to the sixth Pan-American Congress, De held at Havana beginning on January 16, s strongly indicated not only by the announce- that President Coolidge himsell will attend Wu but, also, by the personnel of the gation which will represent the United States. 1 Charles Evans Hughes, former , Dwight M. Morrow, new Am- easily double the other. Undeniably he will have to fight for his old place in the industry. By conforming to the overwhelming popular taste in motor vehicles Mr. Ford has in a sense aband- oned his former position to carry the war into the enemy’s country. On the other hand, manu- facturers of other inexpensive motors have not succeeded in taking his field wholly away from him while he was out of production to create a new Ford. To what extent they may have in- vaded it and how well they will be able to hold conquered ground is the enigma of the motor world for the coming year. Competent authorities believe that a record motor car production, possibly reaching 5,000,000 machines, is by no means outside the possibili- ties of 1928. The world’s appetite for new cars is not a fixed quantity; it will inevitably be stimulated by the resumption of selling activities by the far-flung Ford organization. To put it in another way, pressure upon those who could buy a new car if they would will be more intense than it has ever been before and the prospect's resist- ance will weaken accordingly. Money will go into automobiles that has this year been going into savings banks and securities. In any event, the question how much the Ford shutdown has had to do with such busi- ness recession as we have had this year will be answered in a practical way within the next two or three months. It is Mr, Ford’s ambition to answer it with a thoroughgoing revival of all lagging industries, and he has a habit of real- izing his dreams of bigger business. the world were full of persons having the ational inciination of Presldent Coolidge {elephone companics would have to o out of (Philadelphia Inquirer.)
