The; “gold” in the republican black- red-gold flag acts like a red flag on a bull to many Germans who have strong “color” views. The gold is often a somewhat dingy yellow shade, and this is irrever- ently called “mustard” by the lads of the village and other purists. One of these recently shouted “Mustard” when an automobile | passed along the street carrying! a republican banner on the hood. The owner promptly stopped the car and gave the man to police for insulting the republican colors. Accused in court said he was wvery fond of mustard, had just; been eating sausages with plenty; of it, and coming out of the res- taurdnt had talked of mustard with no reference to the country’s flag. . The explanation seemed lame; to the court, which inflicted a fine | of 70 marks. The defendant ap-| pealed, and the public prosecutor demanded a sentence of two weeks imprisonment, but on thel plea that the heinous action had been committed “on a sudden im- pulse,” the penalty was uitimate- 1y reduced to a fine of 150 marks, roughly $37.50. ——-—-——— CASWELK LEAVING Deputy U.
