THE COMMODITY OF NEWSPAPERS. A newspaper has one staple commodity which it offers its customers, the general public, and that s the news. When it ceases to deliver that staple it not only loses caste as a newspaper but it very naturally loses its customers. No business, and a newspaper is essentially a busi- nees requiring sound judgment and more than average business ability for successful operation, “can exist long if it fails to give its customers full value in trade for the cash they expend. A charge is made against newspapers that they are controlled by their advertisers, a charge that finds support from unsuccessful journalists and that is frequently bandied by whoever wishes to weaken the reputation and influence of news- papers, And because it is reiterated, dug up again and again by some who themselves have something to gain or “an ax to grind,” it is not surprising it has found lodgment in the minds of a not inconsiderable number of people through- out the country Speaking on “What Is a Newspaper?” before the Boston Chamber of Commerce recently, Col. Robert H. McCormick, editor of the Chicago Pribune, one of the country’s greatest daily pub- lications, discussed that charge. In this con- nection he cited figures showing the relation of the advertiser to the income of his own paper, saying: In - copy of the Chicago Tribune, for instance, there were 12,306 separate advertisements paid for by people of all religious and political beliefs. The larg- est advertiser in this newspaper last produced 2.1 per cent, of advert! revenue, Assuming a willingness the part of the advertiser to spend b money for political support rather than sales effect, and assuming ecupidity on the part of the newspaper proprictor, how many advertisers with identical in- terests or the same political opinion would it take to justify a proprietor in jgnoring the vest of his advertising ‘clients, to say nothing of his readers, upon whom he, as well as his advertisers for a living?
