) DOUGLE" NEWS | FIREMEN'S BLOWOUT WAS BIG SULCCESS The big doings of the Douglas Fire Department which were gir- en in the Eagles hall Saturday night were attended by practical- ly everyone on the Island and bhe sides being a good financial suc- cess was thoroughly enjoyed. Nearly 200 people were served at the dinner which was the first feature of the entertainment. The dinner was presided over by Mes- dames Langseth, Fraser and An- derson, asgisted by the committee of fire boys. The card playing, which follow- ed the eats, began promptly at 8 o'clock. There were fifteen tableg engaged and after two hours of play prizes were awarded as fol- lows: For high scores—Mrs, W. E. Cahill and James Manning; for low—to Mrs. Ora Goss and Eil Cashel. . Coffee and -cake were served after the cards, and the evening wound up with dancing which' lasted until about one a. m. The music by the *“Cheechako” orchestra, composed of the Misses Helen Daily, Gladys Flemming. Evelyn Manke and John Niemi ‘Was ‘thoroughly appreciated, ‘The Firemen are very grateful and wish to thank everyone for their assistance and patronage of | the affair. § ————— TWO FIRE ALARMS OVER WEEK END A chimney.fire in the Radovich home and a roof fire in' Marshail Grant's house gave fire depart- ment members some exercise Sat- urday and Sunday and a chance to try out the mew fire truck ani apparatus. The first fire occurred during the depar¢ment’s enter- tainment Saturday evening, and the second fire, Sunday afterncon about 2 o'clock. It was caused by sparks blowing under the tin cov- ering on the roof. No damage re- sulted in either case. ————— OPERATION SUCCESSFUL Mrs. Herbert Kittlesby who- un- derwent an operation for appendi- eitis in St. Ann's hospital Friday ‘8 reported getting along nicely. Town Adopts Women Students of College - LAMONI, lowa, Nov. 7—Ninety- four women students of Graceland ! College of Lamoni have been ° “adopted” by 65 women of the town of Lamoni, as part of a wel fare movement sponsored by Mrs, F. Smith of the Society of ronesses of Graceland College. s, Girl students taken into Lamoni homes, ‘under the plan, are con- sidered members of the family.
