Not choosing to run for elective term, he does mot amplify his announcement. Designing efforts to “draw him out” are futile To date hig will to keep silent on the gitnation he created is inflexibie. Politically in this equation the White House has no spokesman, not even the devoted Chairman Butler. Imagine th lamented President Harding in like .position! Had he lived and grown weary, as certainly he w and resolved to decline renomina how ddifferent it would be? No senten- tious utterances, followed by profound silence, would have rved and spared him. Responsive, ever trustful, his in- nermost thoughts, magnified and mangled from mouth to mouth, quickly would have become common property. A kind- Iy expression about this aspirant or that, construed into a commitment, would have entailed no end of mingled joy and resentment. His closing year would have been fraught with political troubles unspeakable. Human frailty in his ease, in such a situation, would have spelled his undoing. Happily the ordeal was reserved for his prudent and better disciplined successor. Occupying a position of rarely attained in American life, his administration signally successful, sober public consideration of Calvin Coolidge's announced decision robbed it of its tem- porary startling quality. Thinking peo- ple at once understood. Why ghould he choose to carry the heavy burden long- er? He has earned relief by pre-emin- ent service. Unique for its brevity, other- wise his decision, once rightly grasped, was aceepted in the good faith prompt- ing it and taken for granted. Mature judgment of public and press accepted it as final. He timed it aright. Resolved to retire, by plain implication, if not in actual words, rejecting the idea that he was further imperatively needed by country, or indispensible to party, he dealt with absolute fairness toward both country and party in making his de- cision known prior to the year of bat- tle. And thus far he has escaped pit- falls by adhering to the concrete fact and scrupulously avoiding the slightest semblance of dictation or favoritism in the struggle he precipitated. Master of himeelf, he is a veritable pastmaster of the arts of polities, and has put would-be President-makers to their wits’ ends to fathom and shape the future. Proposal to draft him, honestly advo- cated by many, receives insincere sup- on the part of others while mark- time and waiting developments. (Western Tribune.) Remarks by a London hospital doctor on human courage and its variations are interest- ing. Basing his conclusions on soldiers during the war, as well as on men and women in civil} life, he defines four types of bravery. \ First, he said, are the persons who actually feel no fear. This type is slowly vanishing. Sec-| ond are the persons who feel fear but do noli show it. ‘Third are those who feel fear and show it, but face the danger and carry out their ap- pointed tasks in spite of it. Fourth are the per- sons who are so upset by fear that they cannot face the danger .at all. But, says the doctor, persons of the fourth type are sometims so badly frightened that they transpose. themselves into the second type and become unthinkingly reck- less. ‘The third type of person, who feels fear but does not allow it to control him, is coming | his , think | thing else on two | DURING DR. PIGG'S to be, the doctor believes, the only type of brave man. From the literature of earlier periods in the world’s history it seems probable that bravery: was once mostly of the first type, displayed by persons who actually felt no fear. Why this type of unthinking bravery is giving way so rapidly to a type characterized by full feeling of fear but by its control is an h'fcflh\n problem in human evolution.
