There are no striking evidences that the public would feel any alarm over such combinations. Perhaps the real reason lies to some extent in Mr. Willard’s state- ment that “since January 1, more than $100,- 000,000 of new capital stock has been sold by the steam railroads, not including other Iissues proposed but not yet consummated."” Where twenty years ago there were dozens of stock- holders in railroad securities there are today thousands. The public is investing more heavily " in them each succceding year and what in Har- riman's day was of concern to a few has become a matter of financial moment to many. Public confidence is largely restored in its railroads. Demands for service are higher than ever and to enable them to meet those demands, the public is willing to accept almost any policy that is commensurate with sound finaneing and, the general welfare of the nation as a whole. Another excellent example of the fine road and trail work done here this summer by the For- est Service and Bureau of Public Roads is pro- vided by the Fish Creek trall, which is said by miners and prospectors of that section to .be in splendid shape as a result of work done during the season. Approximately 2% miles of construction and repair worl® was completed during the summer. The major part of the work was carried on be- tween the Salmon River highway and Mountain- view and included’ considerable corduroying ‘and repairing, in addition to the construction of a new bridge and the removal of considerable slide debris which has bothered traftic for several years. . The work was performed in a most thor- ough manner and will be of great hanoflt to traffic in that section.
