THE DAILY ALASKA EMPIRE, MONDAY, OCT. 3, 1927. By CLIFF STERRETT WELL, DO SOMETHING, CANT You ? DONT SET THERE LIKE A COUPLA BUMPS NOT EVEN A LEAR 152 STIRRING, AND THE(c] ISNT A SOUL K SIGHT S KETCHIKAY Halibut fishermen here con-| cerned over the reported short ’ of herring bait. The last of the frozen herring on the Ketchikan | market has heen sold. Prince Ra-! pert, Wrangell and Petersburg aro | likewise reported to have exhaust-| ed supplies. The use of herring| for fertilizer is blamed by some.! A number of small halibut fish-| ing vessels are said to be up at Peterbsburg due to of bait. lack | | Mg ‘ | STATEMEN! BY GEORGE Wallis George, president ani| manager of the Juneau Cold Stor-! ! age Company asserted that hel| was in favor of seeing the Ju-| neau commercial club support the| Petershirg Chamber of Com-| merce's resclution asking for the| prohibition of herring for the| manufacture of meal. | “There are plenty of other| things that fertilizer can be made | from without depleting the her| ring,” Mr. George sald. “We have not had a shortage of bait here| as we handle very little herring| because our present plant does nt permit it, and the fishermen secure their fresh bait at Killisnoo, Nev- ertheless there has been a shori- age of herring in the district from Juneau to Ketchikan, and it is my belief that it is urgent that the Junezu Chamber of Commerce endorse the Petersburg resolu- tion.” HANLON'S OPINION “In my opinion and in the opinions of most of the people of Sitka, it would be folly to pro- hibit herring plants from using! herring in the manufacture of meal,” said W. R. Hanlon, may of Sitka. “The people of Petersburg and Wrangell want all of Alaska ta pay for their mistakes,” he said. “Six years ago 1 made a trip to many of the salteries. I found they were throwing their.small fish away and keeping only the large ones to salt. In a short time the fish would not enter thes bays and soon were driven almost entirely out of the Seymour Canal district, because herring will not enter a bay where doad fish have been deposited. ‘ “However, although there may, be a shortage of herring in those’ Alaska, Oct. 3.-| tied | | o S i —_— Steamer Movements | NORTHBOUND b i | Alaska due tomorrow after | noon at 3 o'clock. | SCHEDULED SAILINGS | | Admiral Rogers scheduled to | H #ail from Seattle 5 oat | 10 a. m | Princess Alice scheduled f{o sail from Vanconver Oci, 5 at 9 p. m. | Aleutian scheduled to from Seattle Oct. 8.
