NEIL, (A. P, Sports Writer at Tunney's Training Camp). CHICAGO, Sept. 13.—Has po session of the heavyweight titl given Gene Tunney additional power even though Kis body has gained not a whit of additional strength since he won the (title from Jack Dempsey last fall? Gene thinks so. “Into the return _ fight with Dempsey at Chicago I shall carry the subconscious conviction tha! I am the master of my division that I am the champion—to put it frankly that T am good and| Lhave demonstrated my “It is an instinetive that probab’y naver will form ¢ definite thought in my mind during the heat of the contest. But that knowledge of power, now part of my subconscious mind a t of my fight with Dempsey, has increased my con fidence tremendously and made ma a far beuter fighter.' Shows in Bearing The bearing of a champion shows in every move Tunney makes in the training camp. Seek- ers of autographs, determinedly storming his door, meet Genes police smile, a word or two, and the desired signature no matte- what import matters may be press ing. In training, Gene is every inch a champion. A sense of security, not at all affected, envelopes him as he smiles, swamps banter with his punch catchers, and then ham- mers home blows with ease and and confidence. The dogged seri- ousness of pre-title days has dis- appeared in the realization that someone else must worry about winning the championship now that his own ring mastery has been proven. The burden of proof has passed to other hands Gene is absolute master of his own destiny. In training settles the champion refuses to don the padded helmet that usually pro- tects the face and ears of- a fighter. Instead he has absolute econfidence in his ability to avoid any extra punishment a sparring partner may seek to dole out when stung. Gene too has a, theory, an outgrowth of the early days when he was cut easily abou: ' the head and bled freely, that punches taken on the face form a layer of calloused skin over his eyes and across the cheekbones that is difficult to pieree. | Sometimes Forgets [ How thoroughly the champion- ship virus has seeped into Tun- | ney's bearing show now and men! v ctic ast in these training skirmishes, al- though much against Gene's rea: inclination. One of Tunney’s proud- est boasts is that he never has injured a sparring partner. Yetr' on rare occasions, a punch sifts through the champion’s guard, bangs into his countenance, and for a moment Gene is king, fists; flashing furiously and brows low-; ered, defending his standing as! the ruler of his profession. Then Gene appears just a bit norry.‘ whispers to the youngster facing ' him, and probably promises him-| self m never to do thar Iflll—it least until the night of + Philadelphia PIRATES KEEP LEAD IN RACE FOR PENNANT Giants and Cards Both Win and Are Tied—Cubs Drop Game, Giants NEW Y National Leagt of over the time In a row.
