By all means every farmer should poi- son the squirrels on his farm be- fore the young squirrels are born If this is to be done this season | it must be done in the very near future. Already in some sec- tions of the county the young have been born although they may not have appeared above ground as yet. The following formula is very effective for the poisoning of the Columbia ground squirrel and is recommended by the United States Bureau of Biological Sur- vey: Mix together dry, one ounce of powdered strychnine (alka- loid), one ounce of baking soda (one tablespoonful), one tea- spoonful of saccharine, and three tablespoonfuls of flour. Add a little cold water and _ stir thoroughly to a smooth creamy paste. Apply this mixture to eight or ten quarts of clean oats and mix thoroughly to destri- bute the poison evenly over each grain of oats. Each quart of the poisoned grain is sufficient for from forty to sixty baits. ‘This quantity scattered (one tea- spoonful to a place) along squir- rel trails, or on clean hard sur- faces near the holes will not en- danger livestock. CAUTION, All poison contain- | ers and all untensils used in the preparation of poisons should be kept plainly labled and out | of reach of children, irresponsible persons and livestock. 4 The United States Bureau of Biological Survey cooperating with the University of Idaho Extension Divison and the County Farm Bureau will furn- ish poison to farmers at cost. This can be obtained through the County Agricultural Agent C. M. Grayson at Grangeville, Idaho. Also the Bureau of Biological Survey cooperating with the University Extension Division is in a position to furn- ish poison grain, without cost, for any nontaxable lands which} may join land which is being} farmed. This poison will be furnished providing the farmers adjacent to the public lands are willing to provide the necessary labor required for the spreading To obtain this poison in your community get in touch with your squirrel project leader in your community or with the = County Agent. T.P. Brown CHIROPRACTOR SPRAY YOUR ORCHARD. re, Se It is time we were thinking about the quality of fruit we are | going to grow this year. | Recent inspection of orchards shows that we have a trace of “Fruit Tree Leaf Roller’ in this | county. This is one of the most | serious fruit pests known, and it | allowed to spread is capable o practically destroying our fruit | crop. | Every one is urged to spray their orchard this spring; for by | immediate action and coopera-| tion of all we can very nearly exterminate this pest this year before it gets a good start. The eggs are laid on the bark | in grayish scale like masses and begin hatching at the time fruit buds of apple trees are opening. Where comparatively few worms are present satisfactory control | has been obtained by using | double strength arsenate of lead; | that is four pounds to one hun- | dred gallons of water. This solution will also control the “Coddling Moth” which is main- ly responsible for our wormy | apples. Lime sulphur mixture at the rate of four pounds to one hun- | dred gallons of water can be ad- ded to this same solution and control the Scab of apple and pear trees and the Spider and Blister mites, thus lessening the number of applications needed for the several pests. Two sprayings should be suf- ficient excent in cases of badly ~fested orchards. The first or calyx spray should be applied just as soon as the petals have fallen, and the second or June cover spray about three weeks later or as soon as_ the first hrood of worms begin hatching. If a third spray is necessary it should be applied when the sec- ond brood of worms are hatching which is about ten weeks after the petals have fallen. | County Agent Grayson. | Brighten Up Let me give you my price on papering your home, painting your house or outbuildings.
