“potnerarneente iy” WHAT $100,000,000 MEANS Representative Gallivan, dem- ocrat of Massachusetts, ed.a bill to congress asking for the appropriation of $100,000,- 000 to enforce the prohibition law. The house very promptly voted it down. It seems that fen are going daft over this prohibition mat- ter. When econofy is demand- ed in every department and a tax-ridden public is defanding that appropriations and ex- penses be cut down, a member of the lower house of congress, supposed to contain the bright minds of the nation, asks for an anpropriation of $100,000,000 to “fight the demon rum” after a constitutional amendment pro- hibiting it had begn carried in the United States. Let us stop and study what $100,000,000 means. What could be done with $100,000,000? All of the starving children of Europe could be fed and clothed until the next harvest, with that vast sum. According to the claims of those at the head of this relief work, it would feed 10,000,000 of these children, and it is claimed there are but 3,500,000 of them and efforts are being made to raise $35,000,- 000 to carry them through another year.
