While the petition was|= signed by a number of property | owners, against the present im-| = provement proposed by the city council, a great many signed the | document on the theory that the taxes on the same would be con- viseating. While it is true, that the greater per cent of the sign- ers were not against improve- ments and all of them had the city’s interest at heart, yet they; were opposed to the proposed i im-| provement if the figures, which | they had obtained would be as-| sessed against their property, | for which they are not to be con- demned. While at the present time, the! city council has advanced on the proposition to a point where-the| improvement cannot be stopped, unless on some legal technicality yet the council, to be fair with | the petitioners, offered to com- promise by cutting off some of | the improvement district, which | ‘would bring the cost down con- siderably. | It also appears that many of the figures, or rather the sup-| = posed assessments against the! property were too high in many instances and not correct. The leaders of the remon- strance left the council chamb- ers in a most friendly state of | mind toward the some even offering to withdraw their objections personally, but! stated that they could not speak | | for the remonstrants as a whole. | The remonstrance, no doubt) will be the result of much good | as it brings the council and the; citizens in closer relations, which | || should always be the case as the} city fathers are elected by the senti- ments as a whole, that they may | vote intelligently on matters per- | taining to the city or any im-| provements contemplated. It is safe to say, that the pave- | ment when re-adjusted will be) gone into with practically every | citizen a booster for the improve- ment, which is the wish of the) city fathers. Indications are that a year of unprecedented prosperity and development will be experienced | = in Idaho county in 1920. With winter virtually over, except in the high mountain sections, spring work is progressing and activities more prounced than normal are beginning through- out the county. Grangeville, Cottonwood, and other towns of the prairie, as/ well as towns of the Clearwater | valley, are forging ahead, not with extraordinary rapidity, but steadily, in a business-like way. Proper ty values which have been low in Grangeville during the} last few years, are increasing, and not a store room in the city is vacant—in fact store rooms | 33 are ata premium, whereas, i= two years ago owners of sev-| eral vacant buildings were beg- ging for tenants.
