Just where the notion gained! ground that man could.live with- out working is one of the things hard to understand for average! minds. Itisas necessary for} the human being to keep busy as it is to have food and air. But there are abroad in the, land teachers of a false and de-| cidedly misleading philosphy in regard to labor. They seek to spread the doctrine of idleness. | They would hold work of any; kind ignoble when work is the only thing worth while. Down through the ages has} come the edict of nature that man must work and keep at work. Old Father Boulet who labored so long in the Pacific northwest among the Indians preached and practiced the doc- trine that it is better “to wear out than to rust out.” It was his answer, when, in his ad- vancing years, his friends urged him to let up a trifle in his many labors. What the world needs right} now is plenty of productive work There is too much of the de- structive kind being advocated and practical by radicals who want disorder and chaos to re- place law and order, 2 When the people of the nation decide to get down to work many of the so-called ills will vanish. And one of the things much to be desired that will accomplish will be a decline in the cost of living. Idleness never produc- ed anything but discontent and in work alone is to be found joy and happiness. Ss Of course it is difficult for the head of the family to pay much attention to such a thing as Christmas shopping at this time. But the merchants will all agree that the person who starts out- lining their Christmas selections | at this time has all the advant- | age. When the shopper goes forth} among the stores now the clerks are able to give the attention de- sired. The stocks are complete and new. If the dealer doesn’t | have the desired article he is able to tell when shipment will arrive and the early patron is able to be so advised. When necessary the dealer is able to include a few extras in an order should the patron wish a part- icular article. So those who give attention to Christmas shopping at this time are the ones who profit. Sor them there is no final scurry at the last moment. For them there is the best of everything. Even though it does seem a trifle early this is the time to figure out the Christmas shopping campaigns. The merchants are striving to please the public and} if the public will but heed their request to “shop early” all will have “A Merry Christmas” and } “A Happy New Year.” Estimates made by the Unit- ed States department of agri- culture show how the 87,905,- 000, 000 pounds of milk produc- ed in the United States annually are utilized. Forty-four and a half per cent is used as fresh milk for human consumption, while 86 per cent of the gross, supply is converted into butter, and 4.5 per cent is transformed | into cheese; another 4.5 per cent is transformed into canned milk, 4 per cent is used in ice cream making, 4 per cent is used in feeding calves and hogs on the is lost in shrinkage and other waste of the dairy industry.
