(Strictly in advance) INDEPENDENT IN POLITICS \ Copy for iiaiee of ral meat he hand: ed in by Wednesday to insure change FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1919 = | | WONDERFUL GENERATION | The present generation is one, of wonders, recites an exchange. | We can navigate the air as easi-| ly as birds; we can see through, the human body; we can repro-| duce the voice of our fellow) man; an incident can occur to-} day and it can be reproduced ac- | curately on the screen, as life-| like as the real. But on one of | the most important problems | we have made little improve- ment. Our methods of distri-| buting food are as antiquated as when the War of the Rebellion | was stopped. Food is the most| important problem in the world, | whether the cost be high or low. | In New York City millions of pounds of food are thrown away | every year because of spoilage. The farmer raises the stuff, but | it takes three or four other peo-! ple to get it to other mouths. One-quarter of the citizens of) the United States raise the nec- | essary food for the other three- quarters. Every handling of, food raises the cost and neces- | sarily the price. All prices are) fixed to cover the spoilage and | the consumer foots the bill. It is estimated that half of every dollar paid for food goes for dis- tribution. Men have worked to bring markets and marketing} closer together, but as yet no, solution is found. INSURANCE RATES DROP The first drop in the high cost | of living to be noted is that of | fire insurance. Notice has been | received by fire insurance com-| panies that the 10 per cent sur-| charge on fire risk insurance which went into effect Sept. 18, | 1918, as an emergency measure to meet any extra taxes, will be} removed October 1. This means | a saving of many thousands of | dollars throughout the state as/| it includes all classes of fire in- surance risks since after Octo-| ber 1 all new policies will be less | 10 per cent surcharge. This statement that “all men are born equal’ with which] statesmen love to play, seems} absurd to the thinking men.| Some are born with brains, others without. Some are born with energy and the will to do, others are contended to drift. | Criminalogists tell us that/| “crime is hereritory and many men are born criminals.” Chil- dren of very tender years de-| velop the endencies that govern | them in life. Some are con-) structive, others are destructive. | Some are born to be leaders and| others born to be led, while still | others are born to be driven. | About the only place we know} where ‘ ‘all men are equal” is in| an insane asylum or a peniten- | tiary and the “equality” about | which socialists and bolshevists | rave exists there as it exists! nowhere else. But the equality | is the equality of degredation.— | Moscow Mirror. Sharply bringing to a halt the | action of one state official in| raising the salaries of employes | in his department, the state board of examiners Friday ruled | that no elective officer of the | state nor commissioner appoint: | ed by the governor shall in- | crease salaries of his employes | without approval of the board. | Raises given to three per: SONS | in his department by State Trea- | surer John W. Eagleson were re- | voked by resolution of the board | and the employes returned to their former salary statuts. Why not? If ev ery state official was allowed to raise his employee at | will the state in a short time} would be bankrupt. If their present salary is not sufficient let them either resign or ask for it in the proper way. This ap- plys to officials as well as em- ploye. This business of trying to “railroad” salaries through does not appeal to the average taxpayer.
